Is there a way to set up Suse 9.1 to boot into run level 3 and then startx manually? I can't seem to find this anywhere in Yast...

Thanks - Mike

yast->system->runlevel editor->expert mode
there under were you select the simple and expertmode is an option to set the runlevel after booting.

When you boot in runlevel 3 you can use the "startx command to start X

Thanks - I never did find it under Yast... I'll have to look again.

I ended up using pico to edit /etc/inittab - pretty easy there.

Or open up console and type inint 3. That is the same as the YaST way.

You can also simply type 3 at the grub screen. (Don't know if this helps any).

Also if you want to run startx like you asked in your original post you can't. In run level 3 you have to login first which means you can't have the OS start it for you automatically when it boots, however, you can add startx to your startup script for bash, (if you are using bash) and have it startx automatically once a user logs into the system. This can be done manually for each users .bash file or you can place it in the global /etc/bash file in order to ahve it executed for all users. Actually I should backup a little and let someone else help with the global thing because I'm coming from Redhat and this might not be available on SUSE as there are a quite a few differences between the two...

good luck,

if you always want the box to boot to run level 3, you can specify this in /etc/inittab as follows:

by default it will boot to 5:

# The default runlevel is defined here
id:5:initdefault:

just change the 5 to a 3 :-)
