I have an encryption package that requires a custom kernel be build to include its information. I am very new to SUSE but pretty good with Redhat. So I know how to and have built man different kernels. but before I started I wanted to find out if there is a document somewhere on step by step instructions with SUSE, or can I use what I know in Redhat to build the SUSE kernel. Redhat had some things that seemed to be only in its distro which is why I'm asking.
Also, if I build a new kernel, will it pickup my current settings in the new kernel config or will I need to start from scratch and figure out what I currently have configured and build it in manually to the new kernel? I would like to add the new support without having to spend days trying to get my system to work properly. Thanks, cybercrypt |

I just did a custom build on my 9.1 kernel today. I used http://www.digitalhermit.com/linux/K...ild-HOWTO.html as my guide. This was very close to being right on information wise although there were a few things that were not in order that I found a little confusing as this was the first time I had built a kernel. It also has some SuSE specific info. Since you have compiled kernels on other distros you should be fine with this.
SuSE keeps copies of the config files for the kernel in (I am assuming you are on a PC) /usr/src/linux-VERSION/arch/i386/ with names like defconfig.default for the normal single CPU config file. SuSE pretty much throws in everything in the kernel so I found a lot of extra stuff that I removed. |
