I know linux has tended to have problems with Hewlett Packard computers. Just I was wondering what might be wrong. I'm trying to install OpenSuSE 10.3 on an HP Pavilion a814x. The problem is it fails to load onto. I can't tell if it's a kernel panic or not (it probably is... I thought I saw the "Aieee!" thing but I'm not sure), but after a little bit the install freezes. I also tried looking at it in verbose mode, but things go by too fast to see until it freezes. Here is what it looks like when it freezes (all activity freezes):
![]() ![]() (Sorry for blurry pics, I have a c*** camera) And yeah I checked the memory, it came out fine. I shall also note that Debian, Ubuntu, and Slackware will not install on the machine either. But Windows 2000, XP, and Vista go on it without struggle. |

I can't make out heads or tails from your screen caps, though I don't think it's a kernel panic, simply a module or service that is crashing, but I would suggest following the usual steps when linux won't boot. Start trying the kernel parameters.
You haven't specified the actual configuration of your system (ie. AMD/Intel processor, chipset, etc.) so it's hard to tell if there is a specific kludge. But you can start with trying nolapic, then noapic, and if all else fails, acpi=off. If you post your specs, someone else might be able to provide better direction... Cheers, KV |

Pentium 4 3.06 Ghz, 512MB DDR memory, Nvidia GeForce MX4000.
Edit: I've tried nolapic, noapic, and acpi=off, and it always fails. I was able to get a glimpse of one of the lines right before it goes haywire, there was something among the lines of "Dave Jones" (no quotes) in it. I'll see if I can get a video of it flipping out. |
