Thank you both for your help. I am new to this, but I think the page I need is this one
USB SUSE Installation to a USB Hard Drive, because it specifically says "External USB Hard Drive (Rotating Platter "Not a Flash Drive") " and that's what I will be using, a 250GB HDD, not a flash drive.
I do have a couple of questions though. That page says "In addition, physically disconnect any internally attached hard drives to avoid the possibility of installing to the wrong device.". Is this really needed? I only have one fully functioning hand, and so I don't like messing around with the insides of my PC, so I would rather not have to disconnect my internal HDD just to install OpenSuse to my USB HDD. Also, once I've done all of this, how do I boot into my Suse drive? Like I said, I'm new to this. I have had partitioned hard drives with GRUB looking after the boot sequence, but I have not had a separate OS on a separate HD before.

When you do the install, after choosing "New Install", be sure to always select the 'custom' or 'manual' or 'expert' choices as the install system starts. That way you can get to a page where you inspect the proposed partitioning and get to set the changes to whichever disk is the install target.
Remember, no changes happen until you click on the "Finish" button on the last page.
I think that should handle the problem, BUT I do not know because I have never installed a system onto a USB HDD.
If it does not work, ask a techie friend to help with the internal disk disconnect.
