Ok , a little backtracking.
For the past few weeks I've had an issue with the system hanging at "Unloading Swap" during a reboot or a Shutdown. This issues seemed to resolve itself the other day after an update from YAST respositories. Yesterday I had two new updates recommended , which I took. Now , When I boot up I get the GDM login screen, A: If I log in as my standard user , My screen goes to grey and I hear the boot.wav file , and I have an active Mouse pointer. I also notice that my screen resolution seems to lock at 1280x1024. B: If I login as root , it continues to reflash back to the login screen repeatedly. When I get back to the command line I see this repeatedly : 'Gtk-WARNING **: Ignoring the separator setting' When I type in gdmsetup ( To turn on the verbose logging) I get : (gdmsetup:3537): GTK-WARNING **: cannot open display; |

I didn't install either of those. I guess I can try that. Is XFCE a smaller load the KDE ? |

Run locate with arguments kde, xfce, and fvwm to see if there are any elements of those managers. Edit /etc/sysconfig files displaymanager and windowmanager for proper entries. Use yast2, Software Management. Check all the options for the search. Search for kde, xfce, and fvwm. Installing those display managers will give you something else with which to test your system. For me, GNOME is a cycle hog which regularly crashed my system when I ran high demand things like acroread. Xfce runs smoothly and hasn't crashed yet for me. |
