Well I decided to give Kubuntu a whirl, so I installed it but I didn't like it much...
it installed its own bootloader (GRUB) which is really ugly... aside from that, I would also like to boot SuSe into 'init 3' in order to reinstall the nvidia drivers for my graphics card... So how do I go about re-installing SuSe's boot loader? I don't really care if it still recognizes (K)Ubuntu any longer or not... Darkelve |

YaST, system, bootloader, you'll see an 'other' button on the selection screen on the bottom right. Click that and then select 'propose new configuration'. Save and exit. Reboot.

Wow... thanks, that was MUCH easier than I thought it would be!

I've stickied this topic because we've gotten a lot of questions about reinstalling the Master Boot Record lately. To those of you who installed/reinstalled Windows after installing SUSE, this method also works for you.
(renamed from "Reinstall SUSE Bootloader, it was Kubuntu's" to "Reinstall SUSE Bootloader into MBR", since it works for people who haven't installed Kubuntu alongside SUSE.) ~~ Andrew D. |

A relatively easy way to get rid of boot loaders is to use a Windows 98 boot floppy and type "FDISK /MBR" from the DOS prompt. I tend to do that after I've got rid of all the partitions which isn't always easy.
One nice thing about this method (in my Windows experience) is that it always seems to recover an installation i.e. you install Windows thinking all will be AOK and it doesn't boot properly because of a previously installed Linux boot manager. do this and it works fine ... you don't have to install again. If you need a DOS/Windows 98 floppy (or others .. they have all kinds of stuff including Linux boot disks) go to BootDisk ![]() Kyu |

i have been using suse 10.1 for a time now. but i need to dual boot it with a windows xp.
i installed windows and of course it would overwrite the mbr. i tried to reinstall the suse bootloader using this method http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/tip/18010.html the suse boot loader is back but it cant boot to windows xp. i tried fixing it in yast->boot loader. And from title Windows XP rootnoverify (hd0,0) chainloader +1(hd0,0) it was changed to title Windows XP chainloader (hd0,2)+1 now it reaches the windows login screen, but without the login prompt or names and just stops there. i cant type anything (even ctrl+alt+del). i already reinstalled windows twice and the same problem occurs. how do i fix this? |

I have a dual booted laptop WinXP/openSUSE 10.2 that uses GRUB. I need to reinstall WinXP. Since WinXP rewrites the MBR (and I don't know of a way to get back into my SUSE OS after that) is there a way to rewrite GRUB back so I don't have to reinstall SUSE as well?
Thanks. |
