To change your framebuffer to something like 1280x800 append "vga=0x368" to your kerneloptions and remove vga=0x317

On my girlfriends computer I found that changing the framebuffer mode to widescreen caused the bootsplash screen to turn into text - presumably because there is no widescreen picture for it to display??

Is there an easy way to fix this??

Load the SuSE install CD#1 in the CDROM drive boot up the machine. Choose installation, a couple of screens in there should be an 'other' box. Choose 'boot installed system' from that. Once SuSE is booted up, open up a console, run the following commands as su, and post the results here;

Code:
fdisk -l
Code:
cat /boot/grub/menu.lst
Code:
cat /boot/grub/device.map

Ok, once you figure that out post your menu.lst again because as soon as you did a kernel update it changed that as well. It is always a bad idea to introduce change into a problem when you are trying to troubleshoot it. This rule pertains to many things well beyond Linux.
