On Acer Aspire 5315 it seems that the fan is controlled by software under Vista. It makes the installation of openSUSE10.3 difficult as the CPU overheats and switches off.

This also happens after the installation, whenever a significant amount of data is copied to the laptop. In ubuntu forums there is a long thread of some 120 entries, called "Acer Aspire 5315 Shuts Down". It seems from the thread that this problem occurs because the fan is controlled by software which is accessible only from Vista OS.

It would appear that there is a work around this problem in the ubuntu community. There is a OSS bash script "acer_fancontrol" mentioned and listed in the thread for ubuntu distros.

Is it likely to be applicable to openSUSE 10.3? Where can I find information about the fan control on an openSUSE platform?

I would greatly appreciate any suggestions.

OldAl.
