I am starting to look at laptops with SLED pre-installed, any recommendations where and what to buy?

Lenovo has three models with SLED pre-installed with customizable configurations. I've been eying them up myself lately.

It looks like you can customize your laptop before you buy it. And I'm assuming that the sound drivers and other things like bluetooth would come pre-configured and ready to use, hopefully. Is that what you mean?

What's so special about Lenovo? I bet you could find that exact same set up on an HP, a Gateway, a Compaq, or a Toshiba.

I believe that nearly all notebook are made by several big Chinese companies who slap whosever's name on the unit that is requested. The names of these companies is not widely known, but they are the real manufacturers, not Dell, HP, Gateway etc.

Here is a chart showing who makes which brand:

http://tuxmobil.org/laptop_oem.html

According to the chart, LG makes Lenovos. LG also builds Compaq notebooks, so you might save some money buying a Compaq brand and get the same thing.

I don't think brand is all that important, I would be more concerned with price, screen size, amount of memory, weight, battery life and Linux compatibility, which tends to be very good on models that sell well.

I guess the IBM T61 is the one to get, looks like everyting works and the warranty is pretty good with IBM, I have 2 IBM computers now so they are hard to beat...

What's so special? He asked what brand came with SLED pre-installed. If that's what he wants, then there's not a whole lot of choice.

I simultaneously agree and disagree with that statement. On one hand, you're right: CHIPSET matters! Some brands, however, tend to use more proprietary components in their pcs (especially in laptops) than others. In my own personal experience, certain brands tend to be more reliable on a large scale than others. Everybody's individual experiences will tend to differ, however, so I speak only from my own experience.

If you're just looking for a laptop with a high compatibility, then that casts a wider net for your search. Perhaps you should take a look at what Dell has to offer in terms of Ubuntu laptops. There's also a Dell repository for openSUSE.
