After installation of SUSE 10.1 the sound does not work at all in a Gateway MX6941m I already tested the system following the troubleshooting steps. I made it until the running of the talsa script. I git that my codec is Sigmatel ID 7634. I am at a loss from this point on. As an observation, I did install Fedora Core 8.0 early in this computer, and the sound did work even tough it did not after installation. Also, when I run a Live CD of Ubuntu, the sound works. All help and suggestion are welcome.

A second problem, I cannot access DVDs or CDs in the laptop, they are mounted but I cannot see teir contents and I got the "no permissions message". take care, Antonio.

openSUSE-10.1 comes with version 1.0.11 of alsa.

If you do a search on the alsa site for "sigmatel":
http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php...matel&go=Go
... and given the most current version of alsa is 1.0.16, I think you will see there are many updates to alsa since the 10.1 of openSUSE (and your 1.0.11 of alsa ) was released.

You could look at updating your version of alsa on your PC per this:
http://en.opensuse.org/Alsa-update#openSUSE-10.1
The restart your openSUSE and test your sound.

Reference the diagnostic scripts in the audio troubleshooting guide, what was the problem? They should be easy to run. Lets say the script is called "oldcpu-script". Download it to your PC. Open a konsole and change to the directory where it is downloaded. And run it by typing: "bash oldcpu-script". Its that simple.

Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it. OK, yes, running the scripts was easy, that is how I got the info about the codec. What I dis was to update alsa in my laptop. I installed the 1.0.16 version of the files indicated in the guide. Including libasound, fxload (used by alsa-tools) which was not in my computer!!! I even installed kernel-default since it was not present in my installation. kernel-default was needed by alsa-drver-kmp-default, however when i install the rpm I still get the following:

linux-v534:/home/antonio # rpm -U alsa-driver-kmp-default-1.0.16.hg20080520_2.6.16.54_0.2.5-1.1.i586.rpm error: Failed dependencies:

Please Stop!

When warned about a kernel update its VERY IMPORTANT you stop. Odds are you have made a mistake at this point. Do NOT install a kernel update without knowing what you are doing.

Please provide the output URL that the scripts gave you. ...
http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:AudioTroublesho...led_information

Also provide the output of:
<span style="font-family:Courier New">uname -a
rpm -qa | grep alsa
rpm -q libasound2
cat /etc/modprobe.d/sound</span>

Thank you for the help and the concern about the kernel. I went through the updates for 10.1 and found out that there were some for the kernel. I did update it and installed the rpms that were needed. i did upgrade all the stuff regarding the kernel and also installed libasound which in some of the guides for configuring sound is not even mentioned. Everything works pretty well now. Thanks again and this is a great forum. After the kernel thing I upgraded al the alsa package.
