Typically for an atheros wireless, openSUSE users will install madwifi.
http://en.opensuse.org/Atheros_madwifi
Unfortunately, there is a bug for some AR5007eg versions, and that might cause you problems with madwifi. There may be a patch out for that, as I recall reading something on this forum sometime back, but it will require some searching on this forum to find. .... I just got back off a long vacation, and have a stack of things to sort, so I don't have time to search for this for you now. Maybe someone else will chime in on this.

Reference your sound, that is typically straight forward, if you have internet access. Do you have a wired Internet connection? Without Internet access, it is a bit harder to get updated alsa versions installed. Anyway, for your sound, I recommend you work your way through the audio troublehshooting guide:
http://en.opensuse.org/AudioTroubleshooting
My guess is you may need to update your alsa version, to 1.0.15 or 1.0.16. The audio troubleshooting guide provides some guidance on that.

If you fail in your efforts with the audio troubleshooting guide, please post here the output of:
a. <span style="font-family:Courier New">cat /etc/modprobe.d/sound</span>
d. post here the two URLs provided to you by running the diagnostic scripts recommended to run in the audio troubleshooting guide:

no unfortunately I have only wireless connection so it's impossible for me to update the alsa directly from suse ...

the info that you want to see is :
alsa-oss-1.0.14-23
alsa-oss-32bit-1.0.14-23
alsa-1.0.14-31
alsa-utils-1.0.14-27
alsa-devel-1.0.14-31
alsa-plugins-1.0.14-41

linux-kernel-headers-2.6.22-19
kernel-default-2.6.22.5-31

options snd-hda-intel enable=1 index=0
# u1Nb.Z0J4Co96n9E:82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel

I'l keep trying
10x for now

Too bad. This will make things very difficult for you until you get the wireless working. There are many updates for 10.3, and many 3rd party packages available. Without internet, this will be very hard to setup.

ok, So you have alsa-1.0.14 with the original (non-security patched) kernel that comes with openSUSE-10.3. If you wish to get your sound working with that out of date kernel, then please go here:
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/.../openSUSE_10.3/

and as appropriate for your openSUSE version (ie either i586 or x86_64 (but not both)), download and install:
* alsa-oss
* alsa-oss-32bit
* alsa
* alsa-utils
* alsa-devel
* alsa-plugins
* alsa-firmware
* alsa-tools
* alsa-driver-kmp-default
* libasound2

After installing the above, reboot your PC and test your sound.

# u1Nb.Z0J4Co96n9E:82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller

[/b]
There may be an update needed for this, but until you can state the hardware codec for your sound device (which is provided by the scripts that I recommend you run) its very difficult to provide any good recommendations for an edit to that /etc/modprobe.d/sound file.

Could you also post the output of:
<span style="font-family:Courier New">cat /proc/asound/cards</span>

Great! Congratulations! There is a good possibility that if you update your kernel (once you get internet) you will need to update your alsa packages again, ..... but we can cross that bridge if and when you come to it.

Maybe yes, maybe no.

Quote:

As noted earlier, this worries me, as I have read of a bug with madwifi where an ar5007eg can be misidentified as an ar5006 and it will not work with the standard madwifi.

Did you follow that URL that I gave previous? ie this URL:
http://en.opensuse.org/Atheros_madwifi

Where you need to go here (if a 32-bit openSUSE):
http://madwifi.org/suse/10.3/i586/
and download and install:
* madwifi-0.9.3.3-0.1.i586.rpm
* madwifi-kmp-default-0.9.3.3_2.6.22.16_0.2-0.1.i586.rpm

...or go here (if a 64-bit openSUSE):
http://madwifi.org/suse/10.3/x86_64/
* madwifi-0.9.3.3-0.1.x86_64.rpm
* madwifi-kmp-default-0.9.3.3_2.6.22.16_0.2-0.1.x86_64.rpm

Those madwifi are built for the newer 2.6.22.16 kernel, and may not work with your older 2.6.22.5 kernel, but you can try to install them.

Another place to look for madwifi and madwifi-kmp-default is webpin:
http://packages.opensuse-community.org/

For example, there are madwifi for the patch r3620+AR5007:
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/...0/openSUSE_10.3

... one needs to be careful with webpin not to grab a wrong madwifi (ie don't mistakenly grab a madwifi intended for the EEE PC).

If (and only if) they install successfully, then follow the URL:
http://en.opensuse.org/Atheros_madwifi

Where it says to open up a terminal window, and in an xterm/konsole with root permissions, just run:
<span style="font-family:Courier New">modprobe ath_pci</span>

... and then go into yast > network devices > network card and configure your wireless.

I'm hoping someone else will chime in on this thread, as I am quite busy right now, preparing for a presentation I have to give on Monday. Plus this (wireless) is not my area of expertise.

If the above post does not work for you, then its possible you may have encountered the bug that I noted.

As noted, there is a bug report on the madwifi for the AR5007EG that it is falsely identified as an AR5006EG (reference 11/17/07 22:59:11 comment in http://madwifi.org/ticket/1192). The work around ticket for AR5007EG is here: http://madwifi.org/ticket/1679 (fix is for 32-bit only - unfortunately, last I looked, there was no 64-bit support).

Its possible the the "schmolle1980" URL I provided (http://download.opensuse.org/reposit.../openSUSE_10.3) has the bug fix incorporated. I don't know, and unless someone chimes in with the answer, you will have to explore and find this out for yourself.

Sure, its possible. Now after you update your kernel, your sound may stop functioning, and you may have to re-install the same alsa applications, but instead install version applicable for your new kernel. The URL for these (and the zypper commands for these) are on the audio troubleshooting guide that I referenced earlier:
http://en.opensuse.org/AudioTroubleshooting

Note if you have a madwifi that is subect to the bug, then its possible you could still find some difficulty getting madwifi to function, even after a kernel update.

Thanks. Its finished and out of the way. I'm most happy to have that done and out of the way.
