My laptop has a synaptics touchpad which works fine. However, it is supersensitive and tap-to-click is on by default, which I try not to do.

I've used the command synclient to manually disable the tap features, but i've discovered that this only affects the driver per session. Is there a way i can adjust the driver globally?

You can install ksynaptic (for KDE) or gsynaptic (for GNOME) using the Software Management tool.
One installed you will have a GUI tool found in your applications to edit the touchpad settings with (they end up in xorg.conf).

Thanks for the tip. That just about changed the world of touchpads for me. What a relief! I never used my touchpad on Linux, because of the sensitivity and always on tapping. Very irritating.
I stumbled on this thread by accident, showing a collegue about SuSE.

yeah ksynaptics is definitely a lifesaver. i don't have a mouse yet and the fact that it would register just about anything touching the pad as a tap certainly frustrated me.

I cannot find ksynaptics or Gsynaptics in my Software Management.....and when I downloaded the tar.gz files of both they gave me some error at the time of executing ./configure........

Which distro and version are you using?

As far as the configure script errors, for ksyanptics you probably need a xorg development package and for gsynaptics the gettext tools. But it would be better if you find the right rpm or dep install to make install/de-install/upgrading much easier!

My Software Management says that All the Xorg packages and Getext tools available with distro are installed on my machine

That is strange... I remember 10.3 having the packages in the Main OSS repository (I'm running v 11 now so can't check). Do you have it the Main OSS repro added when looking in YaST > Software Repositories ?

Also, when looking for software for openSUSE it's good to first have a look here : http://software.opensuse.org/search and see if there is an OBS project for it. It's the easiest (and quite safe) way to get things setup.

The link docarockus is referring to is also good.
