Hello. I am trying OpenSuse 10.3 for the first time on my Everex Stepnote NC1502 laptop instead of the pre-loaded Vista. Everything seemed to be working great until I plugged my headphones in. The sound is working just fine over the speaker, but when I plug the headphones in, the sound from the speaker mutes, but there is no sound from the headphone jack. The headphones work in Windows, so I figure it is software related. The laptop is completely up-to-date as far as YaST goes. Can anyone help? Please keep it simple since this is all very new to me. I appreciate any help that I can get. Thanks.

Try updating your alsa versions, adding all the 1.0.16 applications recommended by the opensuse audio troubleshooting guide:
http://en.opensuse.org/AudioTroubleshootin...ng_alsa_via_rpm

Post here for more help if you are unable to get your headphone jack working after updating/adding the applications per the audio troubleshooting guide. When you post next time, please provide the output of:
a. <span style="font-family:Courier New">uname -a</span>
c. output url provided by the two diagnostic scripts from the audio troubleshooting guide (after having updated your alsa version):

I tried to follow the guide and I downloaded all of the needed files, but when I rebooted it still did not work. I looked at Step 5 about editing a file, but it was a little too much for me. Here is the output of rpm -qa | grep alsa:

The first script results are here:

Here is the output of the second:

Heaphone jack does not output any sound. Speaker works fine and mutes when headphones are plugged in, but no sound from headphone jack.

Thanks. Ok, its clear you now have the latest kernel, and the latest alsa. The scripts tell me your PC has a VIA82xx, and more specifically a VIA-VT1708. .... This is the first time, I have seen a VT1708.

It appears others have had this problem, but they solved it by a custom modification to alsa source code, and recompiling:
http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-556217.html
I would recommend that ONLY as a last resort. Please post here before trying this (and note my reply might take a few days, as I am on vacation with limited internet access) ...

Alternatively, you could try editing your /etc/modprobe.d/sound file, adding something like these two lines to that file:

<span style="font-family:Courier New">cat /etc/modprobe.d/sound</span>

I tried adding the two lines and restarting alsa, but I still had no sound from the headphone jack. I looked at the mixer to see if there was anything new, but no. I even rebooted my laptop, just in case, but nothing. I ended up removing the two lines from my sound file. Here is the output of cat /etc/modprobe.d/sound:

alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel

That is all that was displayed. I appreciate the help, by the way...

Too bad.

After being on vacation for 2 weeks (with another 9 days left), I finally obtained a high speed connection for more than 20 minutes, and I did a quick surf on Linux and the VT1708. I think getting the headphone jack to work could be a tough nut to crack. I notice all ( ? ) other distributions appear to be having the same problem with this codec, with the solution that is occasionally reported to work are patches to alsa with a custom recompile.

I even noticed a recommended patch to alsa to work with the 2.6.25 kernel:
http://tomoyo.sourceforge.jp/cgi-bin/lxr/s...h_via.c?a=alpha
The above specifically refers to the "alsa-driver tarball" downloaded from the alsa site (current version is alsa-driver-1.0.16.tar.bz2) where after decompressing the alsa-driver-1.0.16.tar.bz2 one then modifies the alsa-driver-1.0.16/pci/hda/patch_via.c file (which is nominally empty with only a few comment lines). Then custom compile alsa-driver. If it were me, I would use "checkinstall" instead of "make install", as the custom created rpm is easier to handle (from a configuration perspective) than custom compiled code that does not use a homebrewed rpm.

I think you will have to do a lot of surfing on this to get a fix.

If you are not into experimenting with custom compilations (and then de-installing custom compiles after they fail to work properly), then you could try raising a bug report on either:
a. openSUSE, or
b. alsa
For not adequately supporting your Everex Stepnote NC1502 laptop's VT1708 codec.

Other than that, there is not much I can offer, as I do not have your hardware, and the most I can do is speculate on random "hits" from google. Rather senseless, if one does not have the hardware themselves. Best you try different solutions recommended from surfing. Just be certain you go for VT1708 solutions (specifically) and that you backup before trying, and you restore things as they were before, after a failed attempt.

Well, thank you very much for trying. I will look around to see if I can find something...
