Hi,
I need help getting the 3D graphics to work.
I have a hp compaq nw8440 with a ATI Radeon X1600 GPU.

I have succesfully downloaded and installed the latest ATI driver but I can't get X to accept it. I have ran sax2 -r and aticonfig --initial.

When I start sax2 it tells me:
3D acceleration not supported.
SaX2 cannot offer activation of the 3D subsystem because your graphics card/driver doesn't support 3D.

I'm using openSUSE 10.3
Kernel 2.6.22.17-0.1-bigsmp
fglrxinfo:

display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: ATI Mobility Radeon X1600
OpenGL version string: 2.1.7412 FireGL Release

This is my xorg.conf:

There are several different versions of Xorg, it looks like you may be looking at the wrong one, especially given the output when you ran fglrxinfo. A new copy is generated every time you make changes, so this may be a backup copy.

What happens when you run the command

glxgears

OR

fgl_glxgears

If these run OK, I would ignore what Xorg says and assume I had 3d support.

Hi
The output is from /etc/X11/xorg.conf

glxgears shows three gears and gives me the following output when I close it:
11877 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2375.325 FPS

fgl_glxgears shows the same three gears in a spinning cube and gives me:
Using GLX_SGIX_pbuffer
2639 frames in 5.0 seconds = 527.800 FPS
XIO: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0"
after 10769 requests (10768 known processed) with 0 events remaining.

Sounds like you are golden, congrats.

BTW, there should be an ATI control panel application in your program menu, so you might play around with that if you want to run anti aliasing or dual monitors anything fancy.

EDIT: Did fgl_glxgears crash on you? I saw those error messages just now, Even if it did, it's probably no biggie. If you are adventurous, maybe you could try a different driver since you seem to have the basics of ATI driver installation down.

Hi
I ran gnome-xgl-switch --enable-xgl and now I have a 3D desktop with the cube. The performance seems to be lacking, especially when I scroll a webpage in Firefox, it's much slower than in 2D mode. Spinning the cube works OK. Resizing windows also seems to be slow, I'll try another driver and see what happens.
Thanks.

Many people like version 8.40.4. If you are using the installer method, it should be easy to find that one on the ATI site. Don't frget to uninstall the old driver first. There is a command in the linked instructions on the ATI site right near where you download the driver. I don't remember the command right off the top of my head.

Good luck!
