I have an Acer 9300. The webcam works under Kopetec, tho with a dark image. The problem is that kopetec is a bit too much for what I want to do. It currently locks up all my konueror sessions.

I tried xawtv, but it doesn't see my webcam. Is there any other program I can use to operate the webcam?

The application selection depends of course on what you wish to do with the webcam program.

A very simple program I like (for the webcam) is wxcam.
http://wxcam.sourceforge.net/

A packman packaged version is available here:
http://packman.links2linux.org/package/wxcam

For web chatting, amsn also works for me.

Thanks! That's exactly what I was looking for. Just something to capture snapshots and video.

Once it comes up it complains about not being able to find the frame rate. Here's the startup errors

Determining video4linux API version...
Using video4linux 2 API
V4L2_CID_BRIGHTNESS is not supported
V4L2_CID_CONTRAST is not supported
V4L2_CID_GAMMA is not supported
V4L2_CID_SATURATION is not supported
Determining pixel format...
Could not determine pixel format
VIDIOC_DQBUF: Invalid argument

I'm looking this up on the internet. But if you have any pointers here it would be greatly appreciated.

I've never encountered these errors.

You could look here:
http://www.thedirks.org/v4l2/v4l2dev.htm

Reference the controls where you have errors, I note not all devices support those controls. There is this quote from the URL I provided:
Quote:
Devices typically have a number of user-settable controls such as brightness, saturation and so on, which would be presented to the user on a graphical user interface (GUI). But, different devices will have different controls available, and furthermore, the range of possible values, and the default value will vary from device to device. These ioctls provide the information and mechanism to create a nice user interface for these controls that will work correctly with any device.[/b]
Does wxcam provide any picture?

No, wxcam doesn't, it just shows 3 question marks on the title bar.

But kdetv does work! It locks up when I try to do a snapshot tho. And I was kind of hoping to capture video.

I wonder why kdetv works and wxcam doesn't?

Since I am not sitting on your set and playing with your keyboard/pc, this is doubly difficult to figure out. ... Do you have "v4l-conf" installed? Type:
rpm -qa | grep v4l
to confirm.

Here you go

rpm -qa | grep v4l
v4l-conf-3.95-98

I looked at camstream but I hate to install anything that isn't in the repositories. This is a work machine after all.
