I'm trying to get the sound to work on my laptop:

proc: Intel T9300
mobo: Intel GM965 chipset
sound: 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller
Driver: "HDA Intel"
Driver Modules: "snd_hda_intel"

Alsa is also installed.

Whenever I start, all volumes are on 0%. However, when I turn up all volumes I still cannot hear sound. The mixer is also not on mute.

I suspect that it has something to do with the modem not being installed, because with my winxp installation I also had to install those together. The modem driver I found from Lenovo is this one:http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/si...cid=MIGR-69134

Which is unfortunately a 32 bit driver, which I cannot install:

Quote:
make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux-2.6.22.17-0.1-obj/x86_64/default'
make -C ../../../linux-2.6.22.17-0.1 O=../linux-2.6.22.17-0.1-obj/x86_64/default modules
/usr/lib/hsfmodem/modules/Makefile:20: *** WARNING: Trying to compile kernel modules on a x86_64 system while the installed hsf driver package is for i386, this is likely to fail... ***
CC [M] /usr/lib/hsfmodem/modules/mod_engine.o
/usr/lib/hsfmodem/modules/mod_engine.c:1: error: CPU you selected does not support x86-64 instruction set
[/b]
As you can see, it does give some conflicting messages ("package is for i386" and "CPU does not support x86-64").

Though, at the end, I do not care about the modem, who uses them nowadays anyway?
I just want my sound to work!

Quite often alsa 1.0.14 (which comes with openSUSE-10.3) will not support the hardware in newer laptops. There have been a LOT of updates to alsa in the last 6 months to address this situation.

I think it is down. But I am confident it will be back.

Please follow the openSUSE audio troubleshooting guide for guidance:
http://en.opensuse.org/AudioTroubleshooting

Note, assuming you are using openSUSE-10.3, when it comes to updating your alsa, that guide is written for users who applied the Novell/SuSE-GmbH updates to their openSUSE-10.3 kernel. If you are using the original kernel that came with openSUSE-10.3, then let me know, and I'll give you some revised "zypper" commands for updating your alsa.

And if you get totally stumped (and if the troubleshooting guide does not help), please post here:

I updated through yast, which gave me another alsa 1.0.14. Then I followed the guide, updated through adding another repository to yast:

http://download.opensuse.org/reposit...E_10.3_Update/

And updating towards 1.0.16

Edited /etc/modeprob.d/sound by adding 'model=thinkpad' and all the other tricks in the audioguide and nothing happened. I was just writing a new post and figured that I should run both diagnostic scripts again so it will reflect my current situation when I read that only alsa-utils and alsa-firmware were updatet to 1.0.16 and alsa-driver WAS NOT!

So entering alsa-driver in the search taught me that alsa-driver-kmp-default was not even installed Installing these, rebooting and putting up the volume in the mixer did the trick!

FOR USERS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM:
- make sure that you have at least alsa-driver-kmp-default 1.0.16 installed
- make also sure that your volume is at max when you perform 'speaker-test -c2 -Ddefault -twav' through your laptop speakers since you might otherwise not hear it!

Anyway, time for some minimal techno B)

Great! That repository is typically for the 2.6.22.17 kernel, which is the most current "official" updated kernel by Novell/SuSE-GmbH for openSUSE-10.3.

If one was using the 2.6.22.5 kernel (which comes with openSUSE-10.3 cd/dvd), and if one has not yet updated, one would instead use:
Code:
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/multimedia:/audio/openSUSE_10.3/

Good point. Often the alsa-driver-kmp-default 1.0.16 install will fail, if one uses the repository for the 2.6.22.17 kernel, when one has not updated from the 2.6.22.5 kernel. .... I'm thinking that is not clear in the audio troubleshooting guide wiki, and I may have to do some polishing/enhancing of the guide there.

Perhaps true for laptop users. Definitely not true for desktop users. You could blow your speakers, or cause an enormous sound if one is not careful.

Anyway, CONGRATULATIONS !! on sorting your sound, and thanks for sharing your solution.
