HELP........
At Present after getting my system running and connecting with my wifi, got my ATI Driver Installed and running and Installing Compuz-Fusion files. While I was experimenting with my system on how to run the cube and other desktop effects, I got to press CTRL+ALT+Backspace for whatever reason after booting back I loss all my icons located near the clock, KWALLET,KNETWORK MANAGER,KMIX,OPENSUSE UPDATE,KBATTERY, AND OTHER PROGRAMS RUNNED DURING BOOTUP. After this I can no longer connect to my wifi, when loading Knetwork it will no longer run. Would it be possible to recover my previous setup even thou I never did a restore backup or would it be easier to reformat and do a clean install. PLEASE HELP ME.....Has anybody got the cube and other desktop effects to work with an ATI Card, I'm using a Dell 1501 Laptop. |

I do not use an ATI card, nor do I use 3D affects, I do not think I can help.
But in my humble opinion (IMHO) the linux 3D affects are not stable for the average user, they reduce a computer's performance, and IMHO (again) should be avoided. I seriously doubt that your icons would all be lost the way you described, and seriously doubt your wireless would be lost the way you described, and so something similar must have happened to provide that perception. I understand that is you perception, but my view based on my limited experience with this (and again, I don't have an ATI card nor use 3D) is you must have done something else to cause this to happen. It used to be, in a worst case, restoring one's desktop was possible by going to the default configuration, and simply renaming /home/user-name/.kde directory (or what ever its called, I'm not at a linux pc right now) and that is a draconian way of getting one's default desktop back. I do NOT know if that will work for these fancy (unstable) 3D affects. But you talk of wireless problems, and I simply can not see how that is related. In my view you need to tackle each of these problems separately. |

WOW this is a neat problem. I assume that you have since rebooted since this problem?? The first advice I can give you is to hit, CTRL+ESC once and see if you get the Proc list. If you do get that, look at the list of available processes and see if opensuseupdater is running as well as the other processes that used to be there. Look too to see if you have little mini windows in the top left corner of your screen with the icons in there. Also try opening Konsole and typing in some program such as Kmix and see what happens. Try also re-loading kicker. From that process list, look for kicker and kill it, then in a terminal as a regular non-root user, type in kicker and see if the kicker has all the icons back....beyond that, you will have to get deeper into the system. I've had the same kind problem due to something I screwed up myself. I fiddled around with a little more than what's good for my setup. My GUI was all screwed up like yours. I got it all back by reinstalling my graphicscard drivers and rebooting my pc instead of restarting X (ctrl-alt-bcksp).
Works like a charm now. |
