Hey all --
I've played off and on in Linux for several years, and recently moved full time to having my personal laptop as a linux machine. Its a Compaq Presario R3000 laptop, the DVD RW drive in question is model SD-R6252 I have the appropriate firmware update, unfortunately as an .exe file. So I've been trying to find a way to update the firmware in Linux. the options I have come up with so far: 1) find a friend with a similar model laptop and swap drives, install firmware: Solution: Not available as no one I know has this style of laptop, or a laptop with a compatible drive bay 2) use a dos bootloader (IE FreeDos) to run the .exe Solution: Doesn;t work, the .exe requires a graphical interface 3) subpoint to #2 - install a graphical interface to the dos programs and run the file Solution: Haven't been able to get any of the 3 or 4 graphical dos agents to run correctly. 4) Find a Windows Live CD Solution: Still working on this,, attempting to create a Windows Live disc via Bart PE 5) Use Wine or Crossover: Solution: Wine & Crossover run the .exe, but give the following error: "Cannot get the power status of the system" So my question to everyone is: a) is there a better solution to updating my firmware B) Does anyone know how to solve the "Cannot get the power status..." error when running the firmware update in Wine/Crossover? Thanks for any information! -jon- |
