Ati Mobility Firegl V5200 @ Opensuse 10.2 (t60p): Accel Ok, Opengl Not

Hi,

briefly:
ATI drivers from opensuse 10.2 work for acceleration, but not for opengl: glxgears give garbage in the window (nevertheless reporting 3-4000 FPS), not to mention of course that Xgl gives unreadable screen too. Anybody has clues if that can be fixed, or we gotta wait for open ATI drivers?

I have funny experiences with using opensuse from 10 to 10.3 on Thinkpad T60p with ATI Mobility FireGL V5200 graphics card

I bought this laptop because of claimed Linux support, and indeed ver. 10 of suse had all of the hardware mostly handled, although partly by proprietary drivers. Then, in subsequent updates up to 10.3, I lost the 3D acceleration -- due to widely described ATI's dropped support to "older" cards (btw. that was kinda cutting edge 1-2yrs ago). So after many unsuccessfull trials I downgraded to opensuse 10.2 -- the first version when knetworkmanager seems to be almost working, although slightly worse than in 10.3 (that's my personal opinion based upon subjective statistics). And there are even rpms with the proprietary ATI drivers for the right version of Xorg and all. And they mostly work, giving the two mostly (for me) desired features:
1. control of the external monitor (with the Vesa driver I had to reboot WITH the external monitor attached; for starting a presentation that may be emabarrassing :/)
2. acceleration allowing to smoothly play movies in fullscreen
These two make the system usable for presentations, but as I make many pop-science lectures I used to -- in the 10.0 times -- also "impress" the audience with the compiz interface, making a little GNU/Linux advocacy on the way. So it would be nice to get the cube back...

of course it would be the best to incorporate these d***ed proprietary drivers in 10.3 -- but that would probably require downgrading X.org or sth...
