 Ok I have been trying to tackle this issue for 3 weeks now. I have absolutely no sound but Yast recognizes it and it is configured correctly but NO sound. It even states that it is an ALC250. I have gone through the audio troubleshooting, but still no sound, I just don't get it. Even when i do a sound test it seems like its playing but nothing.

Can anyone give me a hand?

If you are using KDE, did you verify that you had the Kmixer sliders up to about 75%, as well as had the master channel assigned and enabled? I know those are the obvious basics, but sometimes those get overlooked. I am not currently using GNOME, so I cannot troubleshoot with that environment.

When you were troubleshooting, did you use the guide by oldcpu found at http://en.opensuse.org/AudioTroubleshooting ? Usually, the steps on that page work.

There should be some other folks posting in this thread soon enough. Good luck, and please post back with further results.

I am using KDE and I did use the same audio troubleshooting tut, but it didn't work. I did that more than 3 times! It seems as though it is on but I don't get a single sound, except that when i have earphones on when i configure the audio and hear a slight pop as if turning on, but no audio.

I have a dual boot with XP and my audio works beautify on that, but like i said it seems as though its on. Oh botha, what to do, what to do!

Can you re-run the two scripts from that audio troubleshooting guide:
http://en.opensuse.org/AudioTroubleshooting
and post the URLs that the script's output here? That will tell us where you ended up in your troubleshooting efforts, and it is essential in order to provide you help. Those scripts will also give us your mixer settings and such, in case bad settings there are contributing to your problems.

Also, please post here the contents of your PCs /etc/modprobe.d/sound file?

Edit: Also, please confirm you installed "alsa-firmware" ..... You can do that by typing: <span style="font-family:Courier New">rpm -q alsa-firmware</span>
If you don't have alsa-firmware installed, please install it before you run the scripts.

TY for your response so fast, even though i have been away.

but I think i messed up my sound driver setup and now it says that kmix is not running and the drivers are wrong. and when i ran the audio troubleshooting it is very different from the last 3 times i did them. but at least i got pc sound to work which is that strange loud beep sound when shutting down. (spdif or something)

How do i Uninstall the audio driver and redo it?

Can you be more precise as to the actual error message you get?

Can you post the URLs?

Is that the best approach? Maybe, ... maybe not. Its hard to judge unless I see the script output.

Simply send the zypper commands (editing as required) to update / re-install your alsa.

Thanks. I note openSUSE-10.3 with a 32-bit install. You upgraded your kernel from 2.6.22.16-0.2 (in the earlier script) to the latest 26.22.17.0-1.

I recommend, per the audio troubleshooting guide, in an xterm/konsole with root permissions, type the following:
Code:
zypper ar http://download.opensuse.org/reposit...E_10.3_Update/ multimedia-audio
zypper install alsa alsa-driver-kmp-default alsa-utils alsa-tools alsa-firmware
zypper rr http://download.opensuse.org/reposit...E_10.3_Update/
Then restart your PC and try your sound again. If that doesn't work, please post the contents of your /etc/modprobe.d/sound file.

Reference the above zypper commands, this is pretty easy. An explanation:
* zypper ar <url> some-arbitrary-repository-name #adds the repository at <url> and assigns it the "some-repository-name".
* zypper install <package1> <package2> <package3> #downloads and installs package1, 2, and 3
* zypper rr <url> #removes the repository <url> from your repository list.
Pretty easy stuff.

It didn't work and the file that you told me to paste is completely empty. Not a single letter.

Can you be more specific. Presumeably it gave you an error. ... Can you provide the EXACT error? EXACT please.

For all I know you typed it wrong ... or perhaps there is another mistake. But without the exact error message, how am I supposed to help.

OK. Thats not unusual when alsa is not configured at all. But when we are done (and your sound is working), then will be an /etc/modprobe.d/sound file.
