Hi,
I just installed 10.3 on my new laptop hp G5050. Everything else works, even wlan but i have a weird sound problem:When i plug in headphones, the laptop speakers still stay on but i also get sound from headphones. It comes through both(!) How could I disable the laptop speakers? Could't seem to find any good answers through searching. Any ideas? |

Thanks for your advice, oldcpu.
I've had some success following the links you posted- I've identified the board type and codec, which is Intel ALC883/888. I tried the steps mentioned in the guide here for the Intel HDA chipset, and after specifying various models I have control over both laptop speakers and headphone levels independently. The channels in kmix don't appear to be labelled correctly, but having run out of time for now, and having managed to resolve the problem of using headphones with the speakers OFF I have decided to leave it like this for the time being. The only problem now is that the "surround" volume is controlling the speaker volumes, and the "front" volume the headphones. As it's all working I'm not too fussed at this stage- there's nothing else wrong that I've noticed. If I improve the situation with any further fiddling I'll post back, but my thankns in the meantime

A few weeks back I exchanged emails with the SuSE-GmbH author of that link, and after comparing notes, we decided not to merge our two guides. But we agreed I would provide a link in the "audio troubleshooting guide" that I wrote, linking his as a good detailed guide to follow for the Intel-HDA. Quote:
To make it easier for you, I pasted a copy of the ALSA-Configuration.txt file (for alsa-1.0.16) here: http://pastebin.ca/953968 Take a look at the AC97 Quirk section (toward the end). One can also change settings elsewhere. Sometimes the sound guru's on IRC #alsa can provide good guidance here. I confess I have not delved into this myself, so other than suggest you try (via trial and error) the ideas from the ALSA-Configuration.txt file, or suggest you obtain help in IRC #alsa, I can't offer much advice. If you do decide to try different AC97 Quirk options (to fix the volume controls being swapped) I can provide suggestions for the syntax to use in your /etc/modprobe.d/sound file. When, of course, you get the time. Good luck. |

Thank you so much. This is very useful info indeed - you're a hero.
I'll have a go when I have some time for tweakery, and report any success here in case it helps anyone else, after all, a lot of my previous issues have been resolved by searching this forum, and indeed your replies!

). I identified that my codec is Conexant CX20549 (Venice) using the command Code:

Thanks once again to both Oldcpu & volpe. |

Hi,
I have followed your instructions and any other I was able to find, but I still didn't solve my problem. I got the latest ALSA-Configuration.txt, installed kernel-source.rpm, updated and installled: alsa, alsa-driver-kmp-default, alsa-utils, alsa-tools, and alsa-firmware. With head -n 1 /proc/asound/card0/codec* I get: ==> /proc/asound/card0/codec#0 <== Codec: Motorola Si3054 ==> /proc/asound/card0/codec#1 <== Codec: Realtek ALC883 Which is a bit strange, since Motorola is my modem. Still I hoped that it will use ALC883. I searched for it in ALSA-Configuration.txt and tried every option that is under ALC883/888. I edited the sound in modprobe.d to use every one of these, but I still have output on both laptop speakers and headphones. After every change, I have restarted sound system and started kmix. Does anyone have the solution for this one? Two days I'm trying to figure this one out, but without success.
