Hello.

I have a dell computer that is running suse 10.2. The sounds card Is onboard intel sound:

Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller

Now the sound works fine for the root user with nothing needed to be changed. However I connect to the box using ldap and the sound does not work for anyone who connects to it. The ldap users are not added to the audio group, however I have another box running suse 10.1 where we connect to it the same way and the ldap users are not added to the audio group and the sound works fine for non-root users.

Also, I pretty much stay logged into the box and only lock it when I am away from it. However the permissions on the tend to change every few hours so that i can't even start alsamixer from a non root user. When this happens I need to correct the permissions:

chmod o+rw /dev/snd/controlC0

and it works fine. Still no sound though. When I run the a speaker test as root it works fine. However when I run it as another user (after alsa mixer has been fixed) I get the following:

speaker-test -c2 ddefault -twav

speaker-test 1.0.13

Playback device is default
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 2 channels
WAV file(s)
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:864snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
Playback open error: -13,Permission denied

So i have two questions: How do i permanently set the permissions on the /dev/snd/controlC0 file? and What is stopping me from getting sound as a non-root user?

Thanks in Advance.

I don't know much about permissions (so I can't answer your questions), and I understand your point about 10.1 did not need to add ldap users to group audio, so why would 10.2 users? ....

However ....

... from a pragmatic perspective, did you try adding ldap users on your 10.2 PC to group audio to see if it made a difference? Note after adding group audio, the users need to log out and then back in for this to have any chance of working. My apologies if you stated you tried that in your post, and I missed it, but it looked to me in your post that you dismissed that "work around" without trying it.

Good luck in your efforts to sort this.

thanks for the reply.

small problem with that. I did not set up the ldap server and also don't have the ldap password so I can not search for ldap users to add. I was kind of hoping I could get a work around without that seeing as how it worked fine on the 10.1 box.
