I am having a bit of trouble gettign the beta X-Fi driver to work in openSUSE 10.3. It jsut doesn't seem to complie. I have installed gcc and the kernel source. I will provide the log it make in terminal when i am installing. It would be nice if it would work cause it is almost pointless with out sound. All advice will be greatly accepted!

Creative's driver wasn't very sucessful from what I've read, most people seem to use the driver OSS released, you can get it from here:

http://www.opensound.com/download.cgi

This worked for me:

Installed it from a console without X running (use the init 3 command as root to drop into a console)

Login as root and use rpm -i oss_driver_filename.rpm to run the installer

Reboot

Once back into your desktop run the command osstest and you should hear some music if all went well

Don't need to be root to run osstest

I haven't worked out how to get a volume control working yet so am using media apps volume sliders for that, but at least I have sound

I've read that some people had to remove alsa before they could get the oss driver to work, although I didn't have to do that myself

What I did have to do though was disable my onboard sound in bios

When you say skype doesn't work do you mean it fails to open?

If I get an application that won't open I try running it from a terminal as it shows the error which stops it from opening which can be a help in fixing it

Opensound.com have a forum and being the people who created and released the driver that may be place to look for help in resolving problems with it, I don't know enough about any issues with it to help any more than I have as it worked without any trouble for me

I think my card's a different model to yours though, it's the f4tality version

If you can't get sound at all with the oss driver and it's causing other problems you can remove it with rpm -e in much the same way as you used rpm -i to install it (it also appears in Yast's Software Management tool on my system)
