Ok so i want to redirect my system console input/output to my serial port. In other words, I want to make my serial port the system console. How do I go about doing this? Which config files do I need to change and what would I need to change?

This has been possible for a long time. You need to get hold of the file Documentation/serial-console.txt in any Linux kernel source distribution. You should be able to find copies of this on the web without having to fetch a kernel source tarball.

Problem is those options needed may not be compiled into SUSE's kernel and you would have to recompile. When you have those options enabled then it should work.

You should also enable serial console in GRUB so that you can control the boot. Not much fun booting blind until the kernel kicks in.
