hi,

as of late I've been considering building a Linux machine from scratch. My first attempt to run Linux on my laptop did not succeed at all (sever hardware problems, eventfully it would just not boot had to go back to windows  )

but this time around I want to do it right. As of right now this is the hardware I'm considering using this hardware:

Shuttle SN68SG2

180 gig Seagate sata hdd 7200rpm

1 gig ddr2 800 kingston ram

20x sony NEC opitarc DVD-RW drive

AMD seprom 64bit 3400+ processor

planning to buy all this stuff from this site on-disk.com according to the site this setup should work with Linux but I'm taking that with a grain of salt if anybody out there is running a similar setup please let me know

any and all advice would be greatly appreciated

thanks

Jeff

The main things to check are the disk and video controllers on the mobo. If you find that they work with another Linux distro, there's a very good chance it will work with OpenSUSE since the base OS is the same.

Memory, whatever your mobo wants. Disk, should work with SATA controllers. Optical drives have been standardised for a long time. CPU, unless it's really bleeding edge that one or two features need support in the kernel, should have no problems with Linux.

I'm shocked that your laptop would not work. You say it would not even boot?

Did you post a thread to get help with the laptop? If so, could you post a link or if that's not possible, tell us where to find the thread.

First, I would say - You might do better shopping around.

I'm in the UK. Many here use this site: http://www.ebuyer.com/

but it will be no use to you.

You are sure to have similar in the US. Like this: http://www.buy.com/ (?)
don't know how good they are an price.

See my sig spec.

The spec you describe above though should be fine. Though I'm not sure what mobo is involved. You could check and then check back here: http://en.opensuse.org/HCL/Main_Boards
