I want to buy this printer/scaner. Is this printer/scanner supported on opensuse?

The general place to look for printer support is here:
http://openprinting.org/printer_list.cgi The entry for the printer you are considering is here: http://openprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?r...non-Pixma_MP210 I read that page to mean there is support for that printer, but it will not be straight forward to set up. It could take a newbie some time to sort this (many hours to months, depending on expertise level). Checking the openSUSE compatibility site, no openSUSE users who have this printer, have taken the time/effort to update the list, hence there is no way of immediately telling if this printer is difficult to setup under openSUSE nor if there are any openSUSE specific quirks: http://en.opensuse.org/HCL/Printers ... again, my assessment is this will be difficult for a newbie. That does not mean it won't work under openSUSE, it just means no one with this printer has taken the time/effort to update the list. |

This printer may work with the gutenprint driver (as noted in the URL I provided). But even if it "works" you will still need to go to YaST > Hardware > Printers and configure to work with the gutenprint driver. Also, if one is forced to use the gutenprint drivers, these drivers do not likely offer the extras that the PIXMA MP210 has over the MP150 (for example). And note that the the Canon drivers are proprietary, are hence are almost definitely NOT included with openSUSE. Also note the comment in the URL I quoted which states: Quote:
... open source ONLY works if users contribute information on compatibility with this printer. In this case openSUSE users (if any) who have this printer have not contributed any information, ... and hence the uncertainty. |

Can you recommend me some printer that will 100% work under opensuse?

The Mp210 that you mention Helen is a multi-function printer so it will scan, copy and print; so when folks get quizzed about these machines, they are trying to answer a) the printing bit and B) the scanning bit;
do you want both? Our way of working is to have a printer (Canon iP5000) and a separate scanner: a very cheap, second-hand CanoScan N650U (chosen because it seemed to work perfectly on linux (http://www.sane-project.org/sane-mfgs.html#Z-CANON); we had the scanning programme already installed; and the plustek backend, as it is called, was then installed and all was good; looking on the page I mention above, various Pixma scanners provide basic to good scanning; you just need to install the backend; the home page for help with scanners is http://www.sane-project.org/ you ask about the perfect printer, that will just work effortlessly on linux; (our Canon printer works effortlessly because we spent a small sum of money to buy turboprint; it drives Canon (and HP and Epson) printers very well; http://www.linux-foundation.org/en/OpenPri...e/DatabaseIntro covers printers http://www.linux-foundation.org/en/OpenPri...ggestedPrinters talks about suggested printers; see if that helps you; they seem to lean towards HP in their advice; I read through it yesterday by chance; best wishes |
