hello,
i installed openSuse 10.3 (64bit dvd) on my dell inspiron 1501 (feb 07) laptop.

this post is from memory about what i did to get everything working, as i have been
using windows xp for the majority, however i look forward to trying openSuse 11 when it
comes out.

1) wireless card
i used the windows drivers, and a gui tool downloaded from software manager (Yast ?).
this gui tool worked great, especially as i had tried tutorials for ndiswrapper several times
without success. i hope this gui tool is built into 11 to help beginners even more. search
for "ndis" in YaST.

2) standby/hibernate problem
the screen would mess up when returning from standby. to get it working i did the following

go to folder
/etc/pm/config.d/
create new file
config

put this in there, and save
S2RAM_OPTS="-r -f"

3) from memory all other hardware was recognised, and with the above steps everything
was working correctly.

in general im happy with 10.3, thanks to the openSUSE team. looking forward to 11.

maybe its too late for these steps to be integrated in 11. nevermind. i hope my post
can help the hardware compatibility page for inspiron 1501 be updated, or to help
users with the same problems i had.

thanks everyone, have a good night

hello,
dell inspiron 1501, purchased february 2007.

amd turion 64 2ghz
512 mb (upgraded months later to 1024) RAM - 896 available for use (rest shared graphics)
60 gb hard disk samsung
dvd+-rw
ati radeon xpress 1150
broadcom 440x 10/100 integrated controller (bcm4401 - b44win.inf)
dell wireless 1390 WLAN mini-card (bcmwl5 - bcmwl5.inf)
ricoh R5C832,R5C843,R5C833 Driver - for SD cards etc
4 usb2 ports

everything is fully compatible with windows xp pro sp2 (sp3 too), and windows xp x64.

i hope this helps you. i have not used SLED so i dont know its compatibility, i have only
tested openSUSE 10.3 on this laptop, along with xp sp2/3, and xp x64.

im interested in SLED but i thought as it was older than openSUSE 10.3, it might have more problems
for some reason - i dont know.
let us know how you get on with it.
