I've installed OpenSuse 10.3 onto a brothers computer, and while it pretty much works out of the box, I'm having problems getting the soundcard to work. Currently sound only comes out of the right speaker. I have tried everything I can find and am hoping to find answers here. I have tried changing the asound.state file, and obviously have tried to to change the sound balance.

Using this resource, I tried to change the asound.state file, and when you reach the point where you need to use the command "alsactl restore" it gives me the following warnings/errors

Quote:
alsactl: set_control:991: warning: name mismatch (Headphone Playback Switch/PC Speaker Playback Switch) for control #9
alsactl: set_control:993: warning: index mismatch (0/0) for control #9
alsactl: set_control:995: failed to obtain info for control #9 (Exec format error)
[/b]
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what steps I should take to resolve this problem? All I really need is true stereo, but if it fixes the surround sound that's a plus. Thanks for the help.

Since I've always used motherboard sound, I've never been knowledgeable in these custom sound cards. Still, it might help if you ran the two diagnostic scripts from the audio troubleshooting guide:
http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:AudioTroublesho...led_information
and post the output URLs that they provide here on this thread.

Please also provide the output of:

It is also possible that creation of a .asoundrc file was more appropriate (and should be used instead) of/than the asound.state file change you made. I hope you kept the original file so you can put it back, if need be. An example of the .asoundrc file is here:
