HELP! I am really struggling trying to choose a new player. They all seem to be locked into Windows formats, or intentionally crippled for the European/US markets.

Which manufacturer produces the most Linux/OGG friendly range of players?

You may consider Cowon players. I went with Cowon Iaudio7 16gb. Plays ogg format without problems and works well with linux.
Cheers
