Hi, I just acquired my new hp-notebook dv2007 and and installed suse 10.1 (32bit) last night. Franly, I didn' t have very high expectations for installation but everything went actually pretty smoothly with exception, ethernet and sound don' t work. Notebook has nForce 430 chipset, I think and as far as I know there has been some similar problems with this chipset, but I haven' t found solution from web to this. Nvidia website says that drivers should be included in kernel. Is there any solution to make ethernet and sound work or do I just have to wait next Suse version? I have also tried Kubuntu 6.06 live cd, sound and ethernet worked ok, but when I installed to hard disk, ethernet failed to work. (Anyway I have used to work with Suse and rather install it than kubuntu) Here are some specifications of notebook: HP DV2007EA AMD Turion 64 X2 -mobile TL-50 1024 MB Memory 100 GB HD NVIDIA® GeForce Go 6150 Nforce 430 (I think, it says MCP51 Ethernet Controller and sound controller) I have used 3-4 years daily linux, but I'm not very good at technical side of Suse. Thanks for any suggestions, /haupitsi P.S. Should I give try to 64 bit version of Suse 10.1? |

The Kubuntu live CD could provide valuable driver information. When you next run it, do 'lsmod' and cut/paste the results to text file. That will tell you what ethernet and sound drivers are loaded. Also, do 'lspci' (as root). Post the info (save on a memory stick if you need to).
Now, one potential issue I'm aware of (not sure if it applies to you) regarding this nvidia chipset, is that after booting into windows, the network hardware can require being discharged before being able to be activated in linux; (turn off the computer and unplug the power cord then when repowered up the ethernet will work on Linux). This has been mentioned before. |

Ok, I see from the lspci results, your ethernet is reported as a Broadcom device:

Let us know how you get on. |

Oops, my mistake re ethernet/wireless mix up. Reading and replying to too many posts. Actually, your 'lsmod' results show that the 'forcedeth' module is loaded. I think you have to download this from NVIDIA.

Ok, problem solved!! I made some heavy googling and I find solution (from this very same forum!): Turn off computer, unplug power cord, take battery out, put battery back, plug power cord, restart Now I got sound and ethernet. Simple, but effective. Thanks all for help! H. |

Glad to hear you've solved your problems. I did mention this to you in my second post.

Thanks Dean,
Sorry, too careless. I actually tried it, unplugged the power cord, but wasn' t wise enough to take battery out (Yes, my first laptop!). Unfortunately problem is only partially solved; When booting from XP to Suse ethernet will not work, I have to unplug power cord and battery everytime. There might be work-around, disabling "wake on lan" from bios (if option available) or using old nvidia forcedeth-driver? http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_nforce_1.0-0310.html Thanks again, H. |
