I've spent a good hour or so reading various NVIDIA threads on this forum, and nothing is helping my situation.... This is a new installation of 10.3 64-bit with a GeForce 7600GS video card. I had NVIDIA drivers with 3D working properly on the system on the previous installation (also 10.3 64-bit). My kernel is 2.6.22.17.

I started by trying the 1-click installation. No errors, but I rebooted afterward and X wouldn't start at all so I ended up at a console. So I installed/updated the packages in YaST from the NVIDIA repository, made sure the nvidia module loaded properly, ran "sax2 -r -m 0=nvidia", and then started X again. That got me to KDE, but still not using the NVIDIA driver. So I downloaded the drivers from NVIDIA's site, installed them (from runlevel 3), and ended up with the same results. The nvidia module IS loaded, and there are no errors in dmesg except something about the nvidia driver tainting the kernel (that happens on most proprietary drivers so it's normal, right?).

Not sure what to do from here. Anyone have any ideas?

I didn't see anything about removing the nvidia rpms 1st. Requires a reboot. Even if you saved the original xorg & copied it over, you still need to reboot to clear the nvidia kernel module.

I had trouble with recent nvidia GO1 drivers not giving me 3D. I removed the rpms; rebooted to runlevel 3; did "sax2 -m 0=vesa"; booted; downloaded the OEM driver NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-100.14.19-pkg2.run (earlier) & rebooted to runlevel 3; set up IAW the guide on nvidia's download page; that worked for me.

Good luck

I'm having problems with this too in that after I used the one click install and rebooted, I was sent into the command line and not the graphical login. I am new to using Linux and all this talk about removing rpm's and runlevels. Can one of you help me understand what I am needing to do to get the NVIDIA drivers to work with my 8800GT? I plan on reinstalling OpenSUSE and trying again by the end of today.

From: http://en.opensuse.org/NVIDIA
"There is still a chance that SaX2 will not detect the newly installed X-server. To rectify this, as root, type sax2 -r into a terminal window, and SaX will redetect the NVIDIA chipset and allow you to set up your desired resolution."
So, boot to the command line as before
Get to root:
su
password

then: "sax2 -r"
which will start sax2 & you should be able to do the setup & when you are satified, "TEST", if that works then "save"

Type "reboot"
and you should be able to boot.

If that doesn't work, at the bootsplash, type "3" and boot. Should boot you to the command line at runlevel 3.

Get to root:
su
password

Type: "sax2 -m 0=vesa" 0 is a zero
which will start sax2 & allow you to install the "vesa" driver (which is a blah driver, but will get you up).
go through the setup & when you are satified, "TEST", if that works then "save"

Type "reboot"
and you should be able to boot.

Then go about removing the previously installed Nvidia drivers using Yast and see the 1st part of the thread & http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx to install the OEM drivers.
there is a link to an openSUSE guide on nvidia's driver download page when you get there.

Have fun
