In fact it was AMD who pioneered the 64-bit extension instructions and Intel licensed them off AMD. That's why some distros like Ubuntu refer to the 64-bit architecture as amd64, but it works equally well with 64-bit capable Intel processors.

Welcome to the forum, snns!
My main system uses an AMD Sempron 64 processor. It works just great. |

Welcome, snns!
My system is running on an AMD Athlon 84x2 4200+ dual core CPU. I'm running OpenSuSE 10.3 x86_64 and it runs fine! Beware, though, that there are still a few issues with the 64-bit versions of some applications. Firefox, for instance, runs well but Java plugins are only available in 32-bit version. I haven't been able to find a 64-bit version of Skype yet, it may still be in the pipeline. Don't let this slow you down, though. Have a go, enjoy! Old Croc |
