In fact it was AMD who pioneered the 64-bit extension instructions and Intel licensed them off AMD. That's why some distros like Ubuntu refer to the 64-bit architecture as amd64, but it works equally well with 64-bit capable Intel processors.

Welcome to the forum, snns!

My main system uses an AMD Sempron 64 processor. It works just great.

Welcome, snns!
My system is running on an AMD Athlon 84x2 4200+ dual core CPU. I'm running
OpenSuSE 10.3 x86_64 and it runs fine!

Beware, though, that there are still a few issues with the 64-bit versions of some applications.
Firefox, for instance, runs well but Java plugins are only available in 32-bit version. I haven't been
able to find a 64-bit version of Skype yet, it may still be in the pipeline.

Don't let this slow you down, though. Have a go, enjoy!

How much did that CPU cost you? I didn't even hear them working on something that high.

You may have to use "kernel parameters" to boot; see: http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Kernel_Pa..._for_ACPI/APIC

I have to use "noapic" on my nForce5 mobo w amd 4600+

I have seen "nolapic" used with the Turions; just type "nolapic" on the kernel line at the bootsplash of the install CD/DVD.

Have fun
