Yesterday, I installed the i586 bigsmp to this 64-bit kernel.
After that it won't boot. I did recovery from the OS DVD and took awhile remove the bigsmp rpm, over 1-2 hours.

The system has over 1000 rpm loaded, eventually I will load RDBMS (DB2, Oracle) rpm to another /opt partition.

I heard rsync, haven't used that yet.

The question here is what is the best way just save the HD BOOTABLE (default) kernel to a /BACKUP drive (in the same system); fastest, less space used.

The bigsmp rpm could touch so many files under the / partition. Is it true?

Instead of spend 1-2 hours by using OS DVD for recovery kernel, other best practices?

Thanks for the help,

The safe way is to follow this howto: http://www.suseforums.net/index.php?showto...1&hl=kernel
install a new kernel (vice update) & still boot the older one
use that as a guide for any kernel of your choice.
or
install with a separate /home partition & just do a clean install to the "/" partition is many times the faster way.

Which part is not clear to you? Took a hour to recover back to the default kernel?
