I am hoping that the vast knowledge in the ether may be able to assist. I have the following harware:
1: asus m2n-mx se mob
2: 400 Gb samsung pata
3: 2 Gb ram
I have installed SUSE 10.3 x64 after using insmod=ide-generic parameter. However on the subsequent boot of the newly installed system, it fails as it cannot find the IDE drive or the dvd drive. Hopefully there is an answer out there and thanking you in advance.

yes, more exactly output when booting can help us to identify the issue :-)

Suse found everything. Right chipset etc. /

Huge problems: No installation media found during install (no IDE support), had to load modules manually. Neither sound nor NIC worked (pre-10.3). For openSUSE-10.3, BIOS needs to be updated to version 1302. older M2Ns shipped with BIOS version 0307 will only install in safe mode on openSUSE-10.3. nVidia GeForce 7950GX2 video card needs to be configured and works on 10.3 with one-click-install. NIC works on openSUSE-10.3 with updated BIOS.

Appologies for the tardiness but I have been trying a few different things and getting the correct error messages.
I have found that unless I use the following parameters the hardrive and dvd (IDE) are not recognised:
insmod=ide-generic brokenmodules=pata_amd
However every time the install process boots, I have to boot the DVD and select recover install system (I may not be using the exact phrase), entering the parameters above. This will fall into manual boot process where I specify the boot and root partitions. The boot then proceeds normally.
Once the system has booted full functionality is achieved and it either continues with the install or at completion of the install all is working normally except that it will not boot normally without going through the process specified above,
If I leave the system boot normally without having the dvd in the drive I get the following messages:
Booting from local drive
isolinux Disk error 80, Ax=0201,Drive 80
Boot failed: press a key to retry
According to Asus the latest BIOS for this board is 0406. I will check what is currently installed and upgrade if necessary.
I have also repartitioned the drive in case there was a problem in having /boot being outside the first 1024 cyls.
the partitions are as follows:
/boot 7.7 Gb
swap 2Gb
/ 368.8 Gb
I hope that I have not missed any question and have supplied enough information. Thanks

re: insmod=ide-generic brokenmodules=pata_amd

you can add this to the /boot/grub/menu.lst

edit it with kate and add that to the first boot process.

By the way, have you tried failsafe boot?

I missed answering the thekernel's question re the grub bootloader options. No I don't get the grub bootloader options at all,
Looking at the hex dump of the MBR, stage1 and stage 2, the MBR looks ok as far as I can tell and points to the stage 1 sector. However the stage 1 does not appear to be pointing to stage2. Double checking this and will advise

I am going to close this post. I have resolved this issue by replacing the PATA drive with an inexpensive sata. SUSE 10.3 x64 installed perfectly without any override parameters. Now very happy with the implementation and thank for your suggestions
