My openSUSE 10.3 is the 64 bit version Firefox says: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.8.1.10) Gecko/20071015 SUSE/2.0.0.10-0.1 Firefox/2.0.0.10 Firefox complains Additional Plug Ins required.. SUN http://java.com/en/ tell me available are : Linux RPM (self-extracting file) Linux (self-extracting file) Linux x64 Linux x64 RPM With *notation on x64's which says Please use the 32-bit version for Java applet and Java Web Start support. YaST Package Update Selector was telling me I had Java-1_5 Now it tells me both Java-1_5 and Java-1_6 are installed... Looked to uninstall the Java-1_5 however it complained about some conflicts... mostly with open office... Whilst trying to figure out what to do now re Java for browser am also looking now at OpenOffice to figure out what the conflict there may be... .... and I have very little idea what am doing ;-) p |

I have both 1.5 and 1.6 installed, for dependency reasons as you found. While this isn't the only way to solve the problem, what I finally found easiest was to simply use i586 java even though openSUSE is 64-bit. And use i586 Firefox. The Firefox plugin can be either the 1.5 or 1.6, but only one. You also need the package "update-alternatives" installed - after installing it, in a terminal as root do:
#/usr/sbin/update-alternatives This will set up the symbolic links necessary for the plugin to work properly. |

The solution is not really complicated, not with openSUSE. That's because, unlike most other 64-bit OS's, openSUSE is a hybrid allowing 32-bit along with 64-bit libraries. Keep in mind that 32-bit java runs fine with a 64-bit OS. Install java as 32-bit (i586); OpenOffice wants java 1.5 and although OO is 64-bit, it will work fine with 32-bit java. Install 32-bit java 1.6 plus the 1.6 plugin; you want 1.6 because there was a graphics handling problem in 1.5 that was fixed in 1.6. When you install 1.6 and also install/run update-alternatives, 1.6 will be set as your system default java. Install Firefox 32-bit and it will see the plugin. |
