Hello

I installed my Opensuse 10.2 on an Athlon XP 2100 (32bit), on an ASUS A7V8X motherboard (Via KT400). I've since ordered an MSI K8T Neo2 V2.0 (Via K8T800) and Athlon XP 3700 (64bit). Will I be able to boot into my existing install (i.e from my existing disk) or will everything fall over?

Also, I use a ATI 9800 Pro graphics card, and read something somewhere about a compatibility issue with the AMD 64. Is this true?

Thanks in advance

Do a clean install. If you have /home on it's own partition. it will be no problem.

Are you sure I can't just use the same disk.

I have successfully made the transition from KT400 to K8T800 before without any trouble.

Are you certain that it won't work?

The success will depend a lot on the chipset. If you are staying with the same chipset manufacturer (ie: VIA to VIA or nVidia to nVidia) the chances are much higher... Crossing from one chipset to another may cause some grief however...

I guess the best way to know for sure is to give it a shot. Either way, I'd still backup your important files first before swapping boards and booting/reinstalling the OS...

Backup your /home folder and do a clean install. You will be much better off.

I agree take the time and do it right..... Your system will love you for a clean install.
As mentioned backup your home folder or partition.

Thanks all for the advice.

I spent a couple of weeks setting this PC up for a computer illiterate friend, so if I can help it, I'll avoid the re-install. I'll let you know how I get on with just using the 32bit install.

I've got my /home on a separate partition so if I have to I can do a clean install.

Well the hardware change went without a hitch.
The alternative chipset was recognised and appropriate drivers loaded dynamically.
The Athlon 64 runs fine in the 32bit environment. Awesome!
