Hello there,
I am pretty new to Linux world, and after I tested Ubuntu 6.01, 6.10, FC5, FC6, Mephis, Vector Linux, OpenSuse 10.1 it seems the last one did get my full attention. Anyway, with OpenSuse 10.2 it seems I will stick with this distro for a while - I will try to migrate from Window$ to Linux. I downloaded the OpenSuse 10.2 64 bit and the installtion went just fine. No issues, no troubles. Straight forward but in the same time letting you to get additional control. WiFi, sound, network, SD, recognized without any issues ...BUT video - ATI x1400. I tried to install the latest drivers from ATI - not working (yes I have to agree that I ignored the fact ATI said the Xorg 6.9 -7.1 is supported) and I went to HowTo's page. Nice instructions but nothing for 64bits. I am wondering if somebody knows how to do it for OpenSuse 10.2 64 bits ? Or should I wait after ATI - maybe they will release the new drivers supporting xorg 7.2 ? Any hint will be very appreciated. |

)There is a recent thread here on how to fall back to xorg 7.1, search for it if you're interested.

(i.e., The Jem Report SuSE 10.2): "WARNING: These instructions are only a placeholder for a future ATI driver release. If you are reading this paragraph, then ATI has not yet released a driver that supports X.org 7.2, which is what ships with openSUSE 10.2. Following the below instructions will cause X.org to fail to start. I am not sure if this procedure will work with an X.org 7.2-compatible ATI driver when one is released, but it should as far as I can tell. There is also an ATI YaST installation source that may work in the future, but does not currently have a driver that works with openSUSE 10.2. In other words, if you have a late-model ATI video card, 3D acceleration is unavailable at this time. The only workaround is to downgrade to an earlier X.org release, which is a lot of work and will ultimately be unmaintainable, so I strongly suggest that you either wait a few weeks for ATI to catch up to Novell, or choose a different GNU/Linux distribution that better meets your 3D rendering needs." When the driver is available that link is where the howto can be found. A "Howto/ATI Driver" or "Downgrade to Xorg 7.1" is here: http://en.opensuse.org/Howto/ATI_Driver I think I'll wait for ATI to produce the driver! Discussion The final Xorg7.2 was scheduled for release 11 Dec. Prior to that everything was developement. For whatever reason ATI chose to wait. ATI was bought by AMD this year and we can expect that AMD has them running 100% on things like a full 100% AMD/ATI system which has enormous potentiial. Should the team turn to on this issue, let's hope that a 3D driver is available in 2- to 3- weeks. An email to ATI to get them moving will help!: Mobility(laptop): http://support.ati.com/ics/survey/survey.a...91&type=web Submit a ticket: https://support.ati.com/ics/support/default...uestionID=21578 Fill up their mailbox! |

Hopefully they get the message. openSuSE can't be the only distro impacted by this...

Unfortunately, the original poster, like me, has the X1400...which makes it difficult to modify your machine since the X1400 is only sold as a notebook card :-)
OP: did you browse around for Xorg 7.1 build for 64-bit? |
