I want to install SUSE Linux 10 on the 4th logical partition G:, size 40GB approx.
My computer is a AMD 64-bit, 160GB HDD, with Win XP loaded on C: and Applications on E: and Data on F: drive. I am not able to choose the logical partition to install SUSE on. Booting through DVD (D: drive) and it starts installer but does not prompt where I want to install it on. Two partitions C: and E: are NTFS and F: and G: are FAT32. Cant even format partition G: to FAT16. Please help. |

Delete the partition and have the SuSE installer use the unallocated space. During installation, you may have to go into the expert/custom partitioner and set up and format /, /home, and /swap.

(XP) How to delete a partition or a logical drive
To delete a partition or logical drive: 1. In the Disk Management window, right-click the partition or logical drive that you want to delete, and then click Delete Partition or Delete Logical Drive. 2. Click Yes when you are prompted to delete the partition or logical drive. The partition or logical drive is deleted. Important • When you delete a partition or a logical drive, all the data on that partition or logical drive, and the partition or the logical drive, are deleted. • You cannot delete the system partition, boot partition, or a partition that contains the active paging (swap) file. • You cannot delete an extended partition unless the extended partition is empty. All logical drives in the extended partition must be deleted before you can delete the extended partition. reference; http://support.microsoft.com/kb/309000/ |

Thanks a lot Harry. I tried as you said. I could delete the partion and start installing on the Free Space. However, I tried to create a /home partiion manually in Expert Mode and it dint work in my favor. While in the Perform Installation stage, I encountered the following: Error: Storage modification failed. System error code was: -3003 Failure occurred during following action: Mounting /dev/hda3 to /home mount -t auto /dev/hda3/mnt/home: mount: you must specify the file system type I am trying to get into compmgmt.msc and delete the "/home" partition I created and reinitiate the installer. I guess I should leave SUSE to create that partition as the other two "/" and "swap". What do you suggest? |

It sounds like you did not install grub on the mbr of hda. Boot up the SuSE install CD #1. Start a new installation. At the first screen you can, choose the 'other' button, then 'boot installed system'. Once SuSE loads, go into yast, system, bootloader, and then 'other', select 'new proposal'. This will reinstall Grub.
