Red face

I'm extremely unhappy with 64 bit Suse 10..
Not much works.

I can't compile very much of anything, third party apps are pretty much a total write off.
I can't install Nero for Linux, my very expensive scanner does NOT work under 64bit, Macromedia stuff does NOT work in Konqueror (9 out of 10 websites I visit I get redirected to the Macromedia website and yes, I've downloaded and installed it, it works in firefox)
EVERY stinking time I start firefox it tells me it can't start because the profile is already in use then when I try to make a new one it says I don't have permission to do so..

There's plenty more but I'll not waste the time on it all..

Suse Linux 10 64 bit SUCKS.....
I want to go back down to 32 bit.
I have the factory DVD that I purchased that has 32 and 64 bit versions on it.
How can I reload the system with the 32bit system??

Thanks!

Yes, I knew that was going to have to happen, but what I'm wondering is what will happen when I boot the DL DVD.
Will it FORCE me to install the 64bit or will I have the option to select 32 or 64 bit?

Thanks!

You'll need to select it. In the bottom-right hand corner of the boot loader, when it asks you if you want to boot from HD, install, etc., there's a thing in the corner. It'll say 64-bit, but if you hit the corresponding F-key, you'll be able to switch it.

Ha!! Thanks much! I've never had to do that before.
I got over anxious waiting for my Suse 10 retail package to come in so I installed the Evaluation package. It was the 64bit only ISO image.
It has some serious problems. A LOT of stuff is broken on that evaluation disc and the 64bit stuff really compounds the problem.
I need total stability, I can't have a system that sort of works sometimes.
I'll go back down to 32bit and stay there until sometime in the future when they work the bugs out.

I guess I had set my hopes too high for 64bit. I still think Suse is feaking awesome though. Always have, since 8.1

Thanks!!

Yeah, 64-bit SuSE isn't my friend either. 64-bit Gentoo is nice... with everything being source based, I'm always compiling stuff, but with an RPM-based distro where I have to wait for people to release 64-bit RPMs, it's not fun at all.

Well, I'm pleased to say that I just did a full reinstall of Suse 10 from my *original* retail DVD and everything is happy now.
MM flash junk works now without blasting me over to the MM download page everytime.
Several other things that were fouled up are working just fine now.
And best of all, my scanner is working!! Yeeeeeeha!!

Now I suppose I will stay with Suse until the next major release. I am seriously concerned about the direction Novell is taking.
This talk about dropping KDE for gnome and the founder of Suse getting run off, that's not good.
So, after Suse sings it's swan song I'll be going to Gentoo also. I've always wanted to try it out but I'm going to wait a bit, I want to see 64bit support become more widespread. The main thing is that Epson needs to offer 64bit packages for their high end big buck scanners.
As long as they only offer 32bit support I'm stuck in 32bit land. That's all there is to that..

Well, thanks for the tips, you got me back on track. My stuff works again!!

hmn.. compiling:

./configure --enable-libsuffix=64 works all the time for me..
Macromedia "stuff" have you checked if the plugin is detected under konqueror?
for firefox try deleting the .mozilla folder

Overall i think suse 10.0 is pretty decent in 64.. but i think kubuntu 64 was easier to handle in the software installation part..
I do think its a waste of hardware to use linux 32bit when u have 64bit hardware.
I can definately notice faster response times when runing 64 vs 32 bit..

by the way.. you need to install kdebase3-nsplugin so that konqueror can scan for plugins.. Flash works perfect on konqueror..

I'll agree, the 64-bit OS does speed most programs up. Blender3D, for example, shows amazing boosts in 64-bit. But for what I use my computer for, which is internet surfing, paper writing, and listening to music, it's not worth it. There are so few 64-bit media players and audio codecs, it's not even funny. Almost 90% of my multimedia applications I've compiled in 32-bit form just so I can listen to my music.
