I had nothing but trouble using the 64 bit version. Programs would not load, frequent freeze-ups and inability to boot properly.
I installed the 32 bit version and almost all the problems went away. I am new to Linux and was seeking an alternative OS, so therefore I was suprised how unstable SuSe 10 (64 bit) was. I am now happily using the 32 bit version and it looks to be a good replacement for 98SE. I really did not want to upgrade to XP since I do not like XP's and MS registration requirements but unfortnatly 98 borks on my new computer. I indorse SuSe 10 (32bit) as a legitamate upgrade path. |

Well I am now running 64 bit. With the new Kernel update and the new Nvidia drivers everything is lookig great! Heres an important find that I made from others posting. CHECK YOUR MEMORY!!!! with memtest or whatever. I found the memory I had got with my new computer was filled with errors. I upgraded to Corsair 1GB and thew out the old. What a pain to reload everything but I am back up now and grooving to 64 bitness. That shows how used to Windows I was to accept manifold glitches and restarts. By the way the new Nvidia drivers are neat.

I don't know the full system setups having problems here, but there must be something wrong. I have SUSE 10 KDE installed on a couple different AMD64 machines and it is ROCK stable. I am using it on a Chaintech Nforce4 Ultra with a Winny AMD64 3000+ here and it works fine, I also have it on an Asus Nforce4 board with a Venice 3200+ and again very stable. I can't make the thing crash and I do some "goofy" stuff. This is the last kernel I loaded, but the defalut worked fine for me.
linux:~> uname -r 2.6.15-rc5-git3-20051214150524-default I added some additional sites for downloading apps and installed Synaptic package manager. Tonight I installed Streamtuner and Streamripper, maybe Gnome app (?) to record some Flamenco Guitar Music. I had to find the startup file and added a link to the desktop and I am ripping now. I did have to work on it to set up the scanner too, spent an evening and a LOT of reading. I will admit my scanner is an old Googlegear (pre ZipZoomFly) $9.99 special though. The scanner works on the Asus board, not on the Chaintech, however I didn't spend time since the faster box will be the main machine. This was where I found the info as I recall - http://www.sane-project.org/ I used Nero for years and wanted it for Linux too. I read others liked K3b better and have found that I do too, although most of my burning is Linux distro CD downloads the rest is making MP3 CDs/DVDs. I never had any problems with earlier versions of Firefox at all, and used synaptic to upgrade to version 1.5, again without problems. Perhaps I'd download a Ubuntu 64bit CD and install it. There is a wealth of info there and it should likely be easier to get going. They have nice Ubuntu Guides that are fantastic. Maybe some of it can help with Suse. Heck I even asked Suse questions there and got good help. I would've used Ubuntu becasue I like Debian based distros, but after my testing I found that Suse was more stable and my wife liked it a lot better. I want her to get off the Microsoft wagon, so Suse 10 is it hopefully. |

huh what i have to say sort of goes along with this thread i tried putting suse 9.1 on my buddys lap top and it installed fine etc....but it was soooooo slow you couldnt do anything it was crazy i was like WTF? he has an athlon 3200+64 @ 2Ghz 512mb of ram and an 80gig hd? so any ideas?
suse did give me a warning at boot though ....you are installing 32 bit software on a 64bit machine continue y/n? |

SuSE 9.1 is quite a bit slower than 10.0, for the average user. Mostly because 10.0 uses a lot of new, and IMO, "testing" material that speeds the system up quite a bit.

I had more luck with kdebase3-nsplugin64 on my x86_64 system. I had to ignore the dependency complaints from yast2 but now everything works fine. |

I found that by installing the Smart package manager, I could install just about any program that I wanted to on 64 bit.
