Ok, i have been looking to jump to 64bit for some time now.. and i just put together a "dream system". hopefully, suse will support all of this stuff. heres my system to be (if i can get my wallet into motion):

Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core 4800+
Motherboard: Asus A8N-SLI Premium
Graphics Card: ATI Radeon X850 or Nvidia GeForce 7800 (hevent decided, maybe you guys can help out)
Sound Card: Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy 4 Pro
Monitor: Samsung SyncMaster 242MP (if i can get save up for it before the rest of the system becomes obsolete)
DVD burner: Plextor PX-716A
Hard Drive: 250 GB Western Digital Caviar SE16 (should i get this or go 10k?)
RAM: 2x Corsair Value Select 1GB PC3200
Case/Power Supply: Antec SX1040BII (enough power for the system?)
Mouse/Keyboard: Logitec Cordless Desktop MX 3100

first question: will it all work?
second quesiotion: will anything else work better?

Thanks,
Collin

Has ati improved their linux support so much already that you can't decide or is this card very linux-friendly?

What are you going to use this system for? primary usage? Then build from there.

Newegg has a 250MB maxtor 150 sata w/16MB buffer @ 72k rpm for $129 = recommended by me, as I plan on getting one.

I think you will find that Nvidia video cards are easier on the mind than ATI. My desktop Nvidia loaded to 3D @ 1st go; laptop ATI took 10 to 12 attempts to successfully load 3d drivers & I still don't know what I did differently to get it to finally work correctly.

I have a Pioneer 106D DVD burner & if I use 16x media it burns @ 16x with K3B = I like it!
Also have a Lite-on 52246S CD burner & if I use 52x media it burns @ 52x with K3B = I like it too!

I find most answers to my questions about AMD systems are found here:

Hope this helps.

I'd suggest to with the same, but a model featuring SATA-II and NCQ!

The western digital is a 300 sata with 16mb buffer. its at 7.2k. the newegg is at 72k? if this isnt a typo, im def going for that.

And the more i think of a nvidia card, the more i like it. i have had nothing but nvidia, and not a problem. the radeon just got awesome reviews.

Pioneer dvd burner? ill look into it. is it a dual layer burner?

No it is not a dual layer burner. I haven't had the cash or courage to try dual layer burnning.

"3d modeling & video editing" = I'd recommend doubleing up on the amount of RAM. Also, you may want to look real hard @ 10K sata.

I got my last couple of PSUs from Ebay for about half-price -- just make sure you get a model that has all the connectors that you need (like video card).

good luck

yea, if im going all out i might as well get a dual layer.

you really think that i need 4 gigs of ram? i have one on this computer and im doing alright. its not blazing, but its enough.

looking at the 10ks now.. what makes scsi so much more expensive than sata. there is a 10k scsi 146gb for nearly a thousand dollars. wow. all the 10k sata drives are either 36 or 74 gb, not nearly enough volume. already, with just windows and suse i have about... 80 gb (not including media other than 10gb of music, i havent got vegas set up in wine yet and i rarely boot in windows) spread over 2 hard drives, and i plan on installing gentoo, suse, and windows on the 64 (and mac if they move to x86 64 processors anytime soon). i guess if i got like 3... at that point i guess itd be cheaper to buy the scsi.. i dunno, ill look into it.

thanks,
Collin
