Well my kids killed my laptop on Sunday  But hopefully my insurance will cover a new one.

I am looking at getting a new laptop with an AMD64 processor 3700(2.4GHz) 2GB DDR400, 8X AGP ATI MRadeon 9700-128MB (Sucks) I am going to request an NVIDA card. 17" LCD, TV Tuner, DVD-R/RW, Blah, Blah. All the bells and whistles.

My question is and I'm sure it has been asked, but is there any real difference using 32 bit apps on this 64bit system? I've heard allot of racket that 64 bit apps on SuSE just don't cut it and most stay with a 32 bit system.

So is there any performance boost with 64 bit hardware using 32bit software?

According to the AMD technotes, there's a 20% performance boost over normal 32-bit software. And I'd agree with that, considering the benchmarks I get on my system.

You *could* always install both the 64-bit and 32-bit editions of SuSE on different partitions...... *heh*

agree with Adrew... there is a better performance with 32 apps and there is much better performance with 64bit apps

Kewl, I kinda thought there was a performance increase. I can't wait till the insurance man gives me my check.

I may be too late but 64-bit is still not as well supported yet. There's lots of software (even for Linux) that doesn't support it, inc. Flash. But hey, I've got one, it's great and well, they must be making software to support it, GO FOR IT!

I agree with you, and is one reason I decided to stick with 32bit with my SuSE 9.3 installation.

The performance boost is not very big, when it comes to handling and running basic apps. But once you switch to multimedia encoding, graphics editing and compiling/debugging, there is a noticable increase, but only if the apps themselves have been properly modified/written for 64bit platforms.

Soon there will be a 'revolution' h34r: and most products will be made for 64-bit
