I have openSUSE 10.3 installed and it works fine. But when I start the computer the 'normal' login screen doesn't appear, instead I have to login in the terminal mode and then start xdm before I get my graphical display. Any idea how I can change this so the login screen appears automatically when booting? Thank you very much! -- matzematze ------------------------------------------------------------------------ matzematze's Profile: http://forums.novell.com/member.php?userid=15088 View this thread: http://forums.novell.com/showthread.php?t=325068 |

matze,
Yast, System, Runlevel Editor, Expert Mode: Set the runlevel to 5. Back to "System", "/etc/sysconfig Editor", Desktop, DISPLAY_MANAGER should be set to kdm. HTH Uwe -- Novell Support Connection Volunteer SysOp Please don't send me support related e-mail unless I ask you to do so. |

Unfortunately, these are already my settings :-(. Do you have another idea? -- matzematze ------------------------------------------------------------------------ matzematze's Profile: http://forums.novell.com/member.php?userid=15088 View this thread: http://forums.novell.com/showthread.php?t=325068 |

Yes, it is already. -- matzematze ------------------------------------------------------------------------ matzematze's Profile: http://forums.novell.com/member.php?userid=15088 View this thread: http://forums.novell.com/showthread.php?t=325068 |

The login screen just took me back to the login screen. I still seemed to need to log in at a CLI and then startx, but startx claimed that I had to delete its running-flag file first. One day I was called away from the machine just after initiating a reboot. It was nearly 10 minutes before I got back. I had the green splash screen showing; I selected KDE session and entered user id and password; wonder of wonders, it all worked just fine. Apparent lesson learned: Give it time to stabilize and get all the background stuff going before trying login. Why? Dunno, but it worked for me. It may very well not be your problem, but give it a shot, just in case. |

:-( Doesn't help as well... Now, I even have problems to start xdm, though I didn't change any of the settings - isn't that usually more a Windows problem :-)? -- matzematze ------------------------------------------------------------------------ matzematze's Profile: http://forums.novell.com/member.php?userid=15088 View this thread: http://forums.novell.com/showthread.php?t=325068 |
