Default No link detected Why??? Broadcom 802.11g adaptor BCM94311 MCG WLan Mini PCI

Hello all,

I tries to get this wireless card working, but cannot find why no link is
detected.

The output of hwinfo command is the following while there should have been a
wireless connection. The wired nic was not connected.
Both network cards are configured in Yast with "Connect as wired" and for
the wireless card the needed firmware is loaded via a script in the
bcm43xx-fwcutter package. I have run as root the command
install_bcn43xx_firmware in the /usr/sbin directory as described in the URL
http://en.opensuse.org/Wireless_network_card

did you copy the firmware? the opensuse wiki gives the method

What does the output of dmesg have to say about bcm43xx? Depending on
which revision of the 94311 that you have, you may need to run a newer
kernel than the 2.6.22 found in openSUSE 10.3.

Hello jdd,

Yes I copied the firmware that is needed for the wireless card. It was
loaded via a script in the bcm43xx-fwcutter package. I have run, as root,
the command install_bcn43xx_firmware in the /usr/sbin directory as
described in the URL:
http://en.opensuse.org/Wireless_network_card

Unfortunately its still not working.

What is the URL of the openSuse wiki page you refered to. Did you use
Knetworkmanager?

yes

but broadcom is know for using different chipsets for similar cards,
so may be I was lucky?

anyway this card was really bad (no sensitivity), the intel one is
much much better, end really cheap...

IRQ errior. try to change the IRQ options in your bios?

I don't see anything else wrong??

The answer is here. A 4311/2 chip NEEDS kernel 2.6.25. The default
openSUSE 2.6.22 kernel will not work with this device. Furthermore,
the you need to use driver b43, not bcm43xx, which means that you will
also need new V4 firmware.I thought I remembered that openSUSE
provided rpm's with newer kernels, but I couldn't find the reference.
Perhaps someone else can provide it, otherwise, you will need to
download and build a 2.6.25 kernel.

For anyone else reporting problems with a Broadcom device, the dmesg
output is absolutely necessary in diagnosing the problem.

That is BS. I have a BCM4311/2 on my computer and get much faster
throughput than my wife's ipw3945 with exactly the same wireless
conditions!

probably a result of the first note (different chipset)
