I found that Epson Stylus D88 was supported on www.linuxprinting.org and I
hoped it to be in the list of printers in SuSE 10.1. But no. Suse still use the old gimp-print and I can't find any rpm's for gutenprint (which is the newest version of gimp-print). I can download a driver from epsons web-site and it works perfect within KDE and it showed up in the printlist in Yast. I opened Gimp and I couldn't find it in the printlist. Why is the printlist in Yast different from the one in gimp? Maybe gimp get its list from gimp-print? So I tried the only other option I found, to pick the Postscript level 1 or 2 and pick the ppd-file. Under command I tried the suggested one (for the normal writer:lp -s -dnormal -oraw) and I also tried to remove -oraw etc. When I did this nothing happened when I tried to print. I found out that I could pick Espon styluc C82 or C84, but the margins would be a little wrong. I found by googling on gutenprint one from SuSE saying that they wouldn't support beta-programs like gutenprint. Well, what will happen then to all of us is that our new printers will not be supported in one of the important programs in Linux, which will not be a good advertisement for Linux. At least should it be optional to install gutenprint instead of gimp-print, like we get the option to install the development branch of gimp! So why don't I compile gutenprint. I tried but it gave me a conflict with the gimp-package. So I guess I also have to remove gimp and then compile it afterwards? Is there something I have ourlooked? There should be an easy way to get printers recommended by www.linuxprinting.org to work in SuSE and gimp if we really want Linux to get a bigger share of the Desktop market! Svein |

What version of gutenprint are you running? Oops..you're out of date already... and apparently a desktop heathen devil child of sorts... Seriously, there's no good way of staying up to date with the latest alpha/beta/whatever ware and providing good support... it's just not possible. I suppose we could all run custom one-off versions of Linux... but support... well.. you're all on your own at that point. I feel your pain though. I bought a bleeding edge Epson at one time... while it's well supported now, at the time I was running SUSE 8 or an early 9... (might have been SUSE 8.1) and in that version, SUSE had put a CVS pull of gimp-print (which was known to be broken with regards to much needed patches from the main trunk). I think removing the existing gimp-print and trying to install your own is the best way in trying to handle this. But don't use YaST... I'd go straight to the CUPS administration stuff via it's browser i/f. Hope it works for you. |

I found a better way: When I left the reference to the PPD-file empty in the print dialog in Gimp it worked! I used Postscript level 2 and under command I used "lp -s -dnormal" (for the normal writer). Thank you anyway. Svein |

Hmmm... interesting. Glad it worked! |
