Hi,
I'm looking for a cheap monochrome laser working with Suse 9.1 Pro for home office use (mostly text with LaTex or KOffice, few diagrams and charts). Samsung ML-2010 is, according to the Samsung homepage, shipped with a easy to install CUPS driver; Brother Hl-2030/2040 needs, as far as I know, a double-stepped installation procedure with a lpr driver followed by a CUPS wrapping driver. (I understand that a Linux user should not be frightened by installation adventures. :-) ) Any experiences? Any suggestions? Theres's nothing more needed than a perfectly working printer. Bernd |

Last year, I bought a Samsung ML-1740 for 99USD (50USD rebate) and it's been working flawlessly. I had to specify a similar model to CUPS (I used the 1710 without problems). If you have a .PPD file for it, simply use that file -- there is an option to select a PPD file during printer setup in YaST. > Samsung ML-2010 is, according to the Samsung homepage, > shipped with a easy to install CUPS driver; Brother Hl-2030/2040 > needs, as far as I know, a double-stepped installation procedure with > a lpr driver followed by a CUPS wrapping driver. I used a Brother HL-1040 for several years, also without problem. IIRC, I also selected a close model number at first, before an actual PPD file became available. > (I understand that a Linux user should not be frightened by > installation adventures. :-) ) For some of us, that's one of the fun points of Linux. Sick, aren't we? ;-) > Any experiences? Any suggestions? If you get a HL-2040, 1. Follow the installation guide for CUPS: http://solutions.brother.com/linux/s..._install3.html There is a special note for SuSE users: "# lppasswd -g sys -a root". At the bottom of the page is the listing of printer configurations. 2. Get the LPR driver here: http://solutions.brother.com/linux/s...r_drivers.html 3. Get the CUPS wrapper driver here: http://solutions.brother.com/linux/s...drivers.html#2 Ignore the whining of "YaST" or "apt-get" ("--nodeps" option), complaining about dependency issues of these drivers. /* Brother Linux Driver Homepage: http://solutions.brother.com/linux/en_us/index.html HL-2040 Specifications: http://solutions.brother.com/hl2040_...s/spec_as.html Here, you learn that HQ1200 print-quality is for MS Windows OS only. Mac and Linux users must content with 600dpi/300dpi. */ I'm happy with the printer for my modest printing needs. But there have been gripes about "paper curling" after printing. It does not bother me. You may want to see test prints whether you can put up with the problem. |
