(sorry did not see the notice about new newsgroups before after
posting on the closing list). Hi, I have a Brother HL-1470N laserprinter with network connection. I'm using SuSE 9.2 Prof. with CUPS for printer control. Some time ago I had problems with postscript error messages when printing certain pages from pdf-documents and was adviced to use the HL-1250 driver instead. This solved the problem at hand with postscript errors terminating the printout. Now I need to print some graphics (logos on letters) and am running into problems with the printing quality. These logos (and not normal tekst from OpenOffice) print so poorly (ragged and unclear) that an old 9-pin matrix printer would perform better, I suspected the printer driver and tried the official PPD file from Brother (despite the fact it is claimed to be 2.4 kernel only). When using YaST the testpage now comes out very clear (and much better than before with the HL-1250 PPD) But when printing from OpenOffice and acroread I now get postscript error messages - like: "ERROR NAME undefined COMMAND filter OPERAND STACK --nametype--". If I remove the two logos (gif-files) from the OpenOffice document the error disappears. I was informed by a danish newsgroup that the CUPS belonging to SuSE 9.2 by default generates postscript level 3 syntax - and my 1470N is only a level 2 printer. I then used the OpenOffice printer configuration to force level 2 postscript syntax (and verified the change by printing to file) - but no change: graphics still generates postscript errors when printing. I found out that claiming the printer is a PCL printer I get better results - but not good enough (it now looks like a 24-pin matrix printer). Just for the record: If I use the SuSE supplied PPD's the printing also fails. So either I'm am doing something wrong - or SuSE 9.2 does not support the HL-1470N printer very well. And it is frustrating that I bought exactly this printer because it supports postscript and can work as a network printer. Can anyone give me any suggestions about what to do ? /Martin Berg |
