Default SMTP Failure

Hello,

I'm not sure if this is the proper forum, but here we go; I've installed
the HowToForge "HowToISP" tutorial using the ISPConfig control panel on my
openSuSe v.10.2 distro sometime ago, though most services work as attended
my SMTP server is unaccessible from outside the wide local area network (
WLAN ), i.e. accross the web when using a email client ( browser ),and is
only accessible from within the WLAN. I've verified that my name servers,
port forwarding settings, that my ISP is not blocking port 25, security
suite ,ISPConfig firewall has been properly configured to allow proper
functioning of the SMTP server, all other services such as, http,DNS,FTP,
pop and imap work as intended except the SMTP server which is provided by
Postfix. What compounds the problem of finding a solution is that the
ISPConfig control panel either doesn't like or denies direct configuration
of various scripts used by various applications under its command, such
as, /etc/postfix/main.cf, /etc/postfix/local-host-names. I've tried the
ISPConfig forum and they are at a lost as to a resolution to my problem,
does anyone have any ideas?

Thank You in advance

Hi
Your mailserver hostname.domainname is not being recognized by the
remote server as a valid server and sender. Are you running a FQDN?

Have you tried telnet? have a look at the link, then look at
then as you do the steps tail -f /var/log/mail log to see what is
happening.

Also in your config have you set the Network interface for receiving
mail? I use webmin for my postfix configuration as well.

Hi,

I have the similar issue. I have 2 computers and one as the mail server,
all behind the router. When sending mail using Mozilla Thurderbird to set
up SMTP server parameter , I fail to send mail by setting mail server to
mail.domain (Relay access denied), but I can send mail when I set it to
192.168.1.2

any hints?

Regards,
Terence

Is mail.domain in the machines hosts file?

Yes, the line:

192.168.1.2 mail.example.com example.com

is in /etc/hosts

and I have open the port 25,53,110 either in router and in server, DNS
server is on and mx is defined. I follow Cool Solutions: 'Cool
Solutions: Configuring a Mail Server on SLES'
(http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/feature/16264.html)

Hi
So you are relaying through your ISP? If so have you set the following
in main.cf;

mydomain = yourisp.net
myorigin = $mydomain
relayhost = mail.yourisp.net

The myorigin parameter specifies the domain that appears in mail that
is posted on this machine. The above setting forces it to be the domain
name of your ISP instead of the full name of your system, and works
with mail servers that permit relay based on domain name (much like
Sendmail's Masquerade feature). The relayhost parameter routes all
outgoing mail through the mailserver of your ISP.

I also had to set the ethernet interface in the config to receive mail.

Hi Malcolm,

No, I do not use relay host. Maybe you misunderstand my question! I
can send mails from my computer connecting to the mail server but
through LAN only. It means that I can send mails only if I set the
Mail Client indicating the server address is 192.168.1.2 rather than
mail.example.com

Why?

Ahh OK, my bad....
Do you have webmin installed? I find it good to setup my systems.

The 192 is a private address, so it must be resolving somehow to your
internet address and what ever is converting doesn't understand your
domain name.

What are you using for DNS?

Can you copy a log entry for a good mail and then one for a bad one
(mung the emails and ip address before posting ;-) )
