Default Change mac address

I connect my Squeezebox network player to Slimserver that I run either
under Suse 10.2 or XP. I got both setups working but each os uses a
different mac address for the nic?? How can that be?? I want both of them
to have the same mac address (and host name) so I don't have reconfigure
my squeezebox everytime.

Martin,

in what way are they different?
Try (as root)
ifdown eth0
ifconfig eth0 hw ether 00:00:00:AA:AA:AA"
ifup eth0

Uwe,

the mac addresses are just very different. I have tried your solution
before and indeed it works. However, next time I boot, my ethxx is
incremented and I'm back at square one.

btw: im using 10.2 on an asrock mobo with embedded nvidia gf6100, nf405
and mcp61? If i am not mistaken i use the automatic configuration tool. I
finally got all the bits to work apart from this network thing...

thx

Martin,

so the number of the eth device increments upon every *boot*, or is it just when it comes back from hibernation?

eth is incremented after every resume and after i change something in
yast....
Meanwhile i have screwed up my configuration in an attempt to get my
nividia drivers recognized in yast - which it doesn't - i'll get back once
i got that sorted. thx

Just a quick one so we can close this thread.
the ethx increment problem is resolved once you set
FORCE_PERSISTANT_NAMES=NO in /etc/sysconfig/network/hardsware/config or
use Yast to do the same thing.
thx

Martin,

dang I heard this before, now that you mention it. Time for a new brain.

Thanks for the feedback!

it appears that even though i changed my mac address correctly there must
be some kind of default mac address somewhere that is being reinstated
after a kernel panic or a suspend/resume problem. My changed mac address
survives a regular reboot but is back to 'default' after a suspend/resume.
Any ideas?
