Hi all,
I've been using linux on and off for about 10 years, and have recently been trying to get back into the swing of things (so I know a fair bit of what's going on, but it's been a little while). I've recently installed openSUSE 10.2. I have a linksys wmp54g v4.1 PCI wireless card that uses the Ralink RT61 chipset. I've installed, and successfully got the card working under Ubuntu using the driver supplied on Ralink's website. However the trail of info I seemed to be following for openSUSE seemed to point to ndiswrapper solutions. I'm attempting to use the YAST network manager solution and have configured my card with the ndiswrapper as directed. I can get the card working... sort of... depending on how I configure the card I can get it to detect the wireless networks in the area, so it definitely seems that the card/driver is working to some extent. I can't seem to join networks if I use DHCP, instead I have to specify an ip, which is fine, except I can't seem to get any packets beyond the wireless card itself once it says I have joined a network. Given this information I've got a couple questions hopefully someone can help me with. 1) Does it seem like this could just be a routing issue? I know typically I just add a route for the default gateway to be my router (192.168.0.1), and although I have done this in the YAST network manager, and simply with "route add default gw 192.168.0.1", that does not seem to help. Now on the ndiswrapper wiki, it did say for v4.1 card not to use ndiswrapper and to use the driver from Ralink's site. 2) If this is the best way to go, since I've already verified it works in Ubuntu, how would I go about backing out of the YAST network manager, and what do I need to do to just use the traditional ifconfig method of adding and configuring the card? I did already try to do this, but with no luck. It seems openSUSE treats network configuration a bit differently than Ubuntu (different configuration files, perscribed device names, etc.). After installing the Ralink driver following their instructions, simply typing: ifconfig ra0 inet 192.168.0.xxx up route add default gw 192.168.0.1 ....got it up and running ok on Ubuntu. I have also tried this same procedure in openSUSE, but with no luck, so I'm assuming there's more to reverting to this way of configuriong the network devices than I was able to figure out. Any insight would be highly appreciated. Thanks, -Mike |

I have problems with a Level One WNC 0301 wireless card which is also RT61 based. Have a look at https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=227470 . You might try the latest driver version suggested by Alex Lau there. Unfortunately I could't find the time yet to test that driver version. So it would be nice, if you could report your experience to bugzilla. |
